Got my Pettit rear flares in today

Since I've never seen closeups of the Pettit flares in it's 'raw form' (if some has already, I was not paying attention), I figured I'd post some:

Hmmm, in serious need of wider wheels...

yeah, definitely wider wheels....

well, just use your imagination for the moment, ok? Think 18X11" or 12" Fikse or sumthin.

Adds just over 2 1/4" to each side

About 43" front to back. I got the ones with the fuel door cutout, though a non-issue after we're finished. I figured it would be easier to sell

Thick beefy FG, unlike the ultra light weight Apexi sideskirts I had. Honestly not sure which is better (thick vs thin, durability? I have doubts thicker is always better), but terms of execution, the Apexi part is better - approaching OEM quality.

The Pettit flares need a bit of work to achieve the same level. Nothing outside the norm of bodywork jobs, though, and any bodyshop worth pulling up to should handle.

The rivet holes are not my cup of tea, but I suppose one could fill them in after attaching the flares to the quarter panels.

Also, anybody comtemplating molding the flares to the sheetmetal would have a bit of work on their hands, as that the FG is pretty thick. I want to say almost 3mm along the top edge (almost 4mm along the fender lip). Here is a pic of a local guy that had his molded, along with Veilside skirts etc.

Execution of the above molding is flawless, but there is the issue of longevity as that bonding two dissimilar materials *may* crack over time, due to temperature extremes (both expand/contract at different rates) and stress (body flex). Probably the best job I've seen. I still have concerns about molding though, so not going this route.

Anyways, all in all a good place to start.

Some more of the red car. Belongs to a Houston RX7 club member, and was featured at Mazda's 'stand' at the Houston car show earlier this year:

The wing and skirts are not my thing, but the mold job came out perfect.

I have always like fender flares. Nice photo's of your pre-installation. Have you decided on a wheel to fill the gap? Loved to see it when your completed.

Speedlines, if I remember correctly? 19x12 (don't know offset). Hate to think what they weigh, hehe. Oh well, my understanding is that he's putting down 500+rwhp, so I guess it matters less.

Thinking Fikse, if I can swing it. May do a SSR Decoltes, or iForged if they have shaped up (business practice wise) anys.

They shipped them same day, so mine were in stock. Check with them to see if they have any more. They said if they didn't, it would be made within 3 days (they are on a 3 day interval manfacturing schedule?)

Hehe - secret? Oh well, it involves getting my mitts on smaller flares for the front to balance it out aesthetically (Little Garage flares, if I can find someone to get them for me), then foregoing FG all together...

Got my 99 bumper that I need to get shaved, and just need to get my 99 wing back from Attila (it's ok dood, take your time ), and that's pretty much it.

See, it's all your fault! I could had my Apexi skirts back, and would have been perfectly happy. But nooooo, you wouldn't sell them back to me...

Daniel

Oh, flares were $300 + $15 or so in shipping.

So are you going to chop up your quarter panel to make those flares functional? I dont know if I could do that to my car...

Daniel,
I want them!!! j/k they are nice though. And it's nice to see some pics of what they look like fresh from pettit. I have a question, what sideskirts are you getting? Or aren't you telling? Just curious.

I've been wondering if you were going widebody ever since the "WTB: Apexi Side Skirts" thread as you made a comment about not needing them.. Now I see what you meant..

Also is "Little Garage" a company I never heard of or did I miss something?

Anyways, nice flares and let me know if you want to get a group buy going for "A little bit of sanity..."

Yes, to fit the wider wheels the original sheetmetal underneath the flares will have to be cut. I've done so much to my car, it's a none issue to me now hehe.

rx7speed811, black99: no, no sideskirts. Trying to keep the original lines as much as possible (people in the background, say "wrighhhtt" )I may get some FEED CF sidesteps later, after my bank account recovers a little.

This is the look I'm trying to acheive, the rear 3/4 look of the Pettit race car, except minus the stickers, the wing, the GTC bumper, plexiglass windows, well... :

and with slight flares on the front, and my 99 bumper. I want the flares to be integrated with the stock sheet metal, like the red car above (which was molded). I really want stay with sheetmetal everywhere (more for my peace of mind, more then anything else I suppose), so I'm having the flares duplicated in sheetmetal.

Cesar's car (the red car) has actually had the FG molded flares for supposedly quite awhiles, so it looks like if done right, this method can last a reasonable whiles. I hear conflicting info as to whether or not he daily drives it (as opposed to being a trailer queen).

If I put skirts (other then the FEED sidesteps), I would have to have it fitted to the flared sheetmetal at the bottom, plus it would make me want to paint the 99 lip to match.

If the lip was not painted, the lower body line of the car (extended lower by the sideskirts) would not match the bumper lip. I've debated it for awhiles, and I think I really like the 99 lip unpainted, so leaving off any sideskirts (that extend the body line lower) would not cause a break in the body line from the bumper lip to the sideskirts. I need to dig up a pic of what I'm talking about.

Little Garage is a tiny shop in Japan that I saw in an Option magazine a couple years ago www.littlenet.co.jp (bottom link at left) Their front flares add 1" to each side, and IMHO will complement the Pettit rear flares nicely. FYI, their rear flares add 2" to the rear like the Pettits, but do not extend all the way down. N/m with the pushed out wheel look on thier site, they have since come to thier senses and taken off the 1" spacers they had on there hehe. I'll post pics of that when I get home, can't find TcPlaya's pic he posted...

Ltr!

Hormones, hormones.

Think I've got a break through on the front over fenders, so hopefully I'll have more on this soon.

Need to do this quickly as that the Supra owner friend (that is helping me paint) is threatening to start painting w/o me, given winter is coming up fast here in Houston.

The manager at the sheet metal fab shop says it's ok to take pics of the the fab process, so hopefully we'll have some photos to show.

5th picture/caption down in my first post.

$300 from Pettit for the set, plus shipping. My set will be available after the fab shop finishes with it, if anybody is interested in that along with a smaller set for the front. Email if interested.

Dclin,

good move.. I really like the flares.. what's stopping me.. $$$$ rims.. LOL and power to compensate.. Make sure you take pics of the whole transformation, i'm very interested to see... If I was goin to put sideskirts.. the FEED would def be the best idea.. if you wanted something that fit w/ the body lines.. OEM sideskirts or the RE sides would flow..

I was goin to base my FD from this one... I freaking LOVE this FD..
