Ok, so I am almost %100 sure something like this has been covered before, but search results came up with nothing.

Has anyone used a black lightly textured (to hide the scratches) spray paint to "fix" thier really scratched interior plastics?

Nothing is broken, they are just VERY used... and have typical wear/tear. For the time being until I can justify spending money to replace smaller trivial thinks like this, I want to coat them to make them look good again.

If I recall a long time ago I saw an interior with grey texured shift boot surround/stereo surround plastics. I know they didn't come like this, so are there any others who have tried it with black textured paint (I want to keep the same color scheme)



And don't even try to tell me to search.

 

yeah i did this with mine. I did it extensively in my interior. Many of my parts needed fiberglass repair work. My gauge dome for instance cracked in about 4 pieces and i superglued it all together then reinforced it with fiberglass.

I used textured black paint. it came out quite well and saved alot of time. It seemed no matter how much sanding i did i couldnt get everything perfectly smooth again. The textured paint hid all the imperfections and looked like it was supposed to be that way.

 

cool. Did you do everything including the door trim? I figured the texture would hide the imperfections and still look like OE.

Do you by any chance have a photo handy?

 

textured non-painted plastics came stock from '94 on

im almost finished cleaning mine up, a fairly strong ammonia solution (30/70 ammonia/water or so) and some rubbing will remove all the old paint and leave a nice clean surface. Deep scratches or marks that go into the plastic wont be removed though...

im using some sandable primer to build up in the scratches. Its coming along really well. I should be finished by the weekend if i get a chance i'll post some pics.

Anyway i sanded the hell out of the center console piece
i got the dupli-color black primer
i've done a few coats
now im going to sand and repeat until its smooth
then im going to use flat black model spray paint that i picked up at michaels

i've used the model paint on my other cars interior and it looks factory

I used plasti-dip when i did mine, turned out great but I wish I would of done a textured coating instead of copying the factory finish on the 93's. Seems like alot of guys have used bumper paint and have had great results with appearance and durability.

 

hmm, that sound like an option. how durable is the flat black model paint... and does it feel somewhat nice, not like typical spraypaint chalkboard feel?

 

I am also interested in this as well, I was thinking of using a truck bed liner application on the console pieces. I have seen pic's and personally I thought it looked very good!

 

yeah i had to do that on my 93 base model too.. the textured stuff was peeling off so i took all my dash trim and wet sanded everything right down to the plastic.. took me a little while cause it was peeling out okay in some parts but others, not so much.. Then i just had a guy at a body shop paint them for me in flat black.
Came out nice it doesnt even look like its painted .. he charged me 150 to prep everything, bake it or whatever they do to it and paint.. and you cant even catch any difference where it meets the original texture so that was good

 

The repainted insides look so nice compared to the old stuff.

 

Oh btw, if youre thinking about painting it take it to a shop or a pro... cause u'll never get a fine smooth surface with those spray cans and it'll always end up cracking or peeling again if its not preped correctly .. plastics are tough believe me..

 

the one in my other car looks great there is a little texture to it but it feels like stock unpainted plastic. I just primed my shifter console last night and started sanding with 400 git sandpaper. most of the scratches are out. going to sand some more tonight and do another coat or two then repeat. All you have to do is not be lazy about doing it. plus i got the piece beat to hell for $30 found some sand paper and got $10 worth of spray paint. $40 total for the whole deal is a lot cheaper than $150.

I dont have a camera on me but this weekend i'll take some pics of the finished product. I might have some of the before but i'll have to look around.

 

I dont know if the bottom half was plastic dipped or what but it was like a rubbery covering that just peeled off. after i got it off i started with 100g then went to 150g sandpaper and finished prepping with 400g.

 

yeah you could do it with spray paint no doubt .. but like i said before the spray can will always get that sandy feel to it... plus mine was 150 for the whole trim setup ryan.. the speedometer dome the, the stereo bezel trim, shifter console and everything else in it...

 

My interior plastics were ****.

I replaced the drivers side plastic with a used one but it still looked like *** so I set out to fix everything to my liking.

I removed all of the rubber from everything with laquer thinner. Then, I took the pieces to a local body shop. I had everything sanded down and painted body color - Montego Blue.

When I assembleld the plastics to the door panels, I fiberglassed and reinforced the panels - especially the drivers side. The passenger side pull was also epoxied. Basically the plastic panels are non removable from the door panels now. I even fiberglassed the map pocket to the door panel and epoxied the lid shut. This strengthened the doors. I don't plan on ever having to remove them anyway. The plus side to all that epoxy and fiberglass is that I can use my doors LIKE DOORS again!

Total cost to have the panels painted and clear coated to prevent scratching: $300 (He will extend this price to anyone that wants this done. PM Me if you're interested.) You have to remove the rubber **** though.

The panels seem very durable and the thick clear coat seems to make them very scratch resistant.

this is interesting because i was just talking to a buddy that paints about doing my interior pieces in montego blue..

now that i actually get to see it . It doesnt look all that bad. Not sure of it though.

I also just saw an fd at a meet yesterday with it all painted gloss black . that looked very nice.

 

be very careful when removing and reinstalling any of these pieces! the plastic threads tend to break off amazingly easily!

 

Has anyone done a matte black on the plastics w/ clear coat? Gloss black looks a little "loud" to me...

 

is that a mongtego blue paint that you sprayed your dash with??
