Found a good paint for interior plastic
I took my car apart this weekend to repaint my peeling black interior plastic panels/dash gunmetal grey and they look great. I used Tamiya Light Gunmetal spray paint (TS-42) and it provided a nice clean contrast for the black interior. It looks like it could have been a factory interior option. It gave the interior a nice facelift, similar to some of the look of newer cars these days. Took about 3 hours for the entire job which included removing the dash, console, and both door panels. I'll post the pictures later in the day after work.
I started by spraying several light ghost layers alternating between horizontal and vertical sprays, and then put on the final layers of spray using a diagonal pattern while alternating directions between layers to provide equal spray coverage.
Im thinking of putting some kind of clear coat on the panels to add some shine and a smooth slick finish, while adding some protection from the elements...but not sure of how to go about doing it. Anyone have any insight on how I can do this?
The Tamiya spray paints can be found at most hobby shops that specialize in models or RC cars

I brought my center console piece to the guy at the hobby shop and he said i should just paint right over it, and that the Tamiya paint would hold up fairly well.
There was no difference in appearance/texture between the parts that were painted over and the ones that were stripped/buffed. There IS a hardly noticeable line on the parts where the paint was peeling, but it would require a really close look to notice. I think several more layers would cover it quite nicely...but if you have the time, I'd suggest stripping the paint and then buff out the plastic (do not sand!) prior to spraying
EDIT:
Mr. Mahtab -- Thanks! I lost that thing ever since the crash, and was too lazy to make another one

Very nice look. I'm curious, how's the texture feel like? It's not stick-to-your-skin feel, is it? Well, if you want to know more about texturing and such, www.efini.net has a pretty detailed article with photos about painting and texturing the dash pieces in the Japan Connection section. He also moved his interior fan switches to the ash try to make room for some gauges. Check it out! I also have a really long email that Wael (www.efini.net guy) forwarded to me that clarifies a few things that the "translated" article is unclear about. If you want it, I'll forward it to you. It's 6 pages or so.

Yeah, the paint turned out a bit lighter than what I had expected, Gimme a few months and I'll probably try totally stripping the paint and applying a darker gunmetal. TS-42 was light gun metal, so im gonna turn it down a notch next time around.
The consistency is very smooth and does not stick. The feel is akin to notebook paper and does not feel gritty at all.

If you could email me that article on relocating the AC controls that would be great! I was planning on doing it, even though i've heard that it's a real PITA to relocate the AC control cups
send them to tech@housedesign-film.com

That is the sweetest interior ever!!!
Keep us posted on any future updates on new paints...
Also...keep us posted on the longevity of the paint...do you live in a humid or dry location. Park in the garage or sun exposed alot...let us know the conditions the paint lives in.
Now all you need is to get the dials in gunmetal grey...SWEEEEEEETTTTT!!

I garage my car at night which keeps the car cool and dry, but for the meantime, my black car/interior bakes under the california sun M-F, 9-5. Will be getting a daily driver in 3-4 months, so the car will be getting pampered thereafter. I anticipate the paint will last at least a year in highly unfavorable conditions. 5 minutes after applying the paint, it was dry and there was absolutely no rub off-- strong stuff

That looks awesome!
Did you paint the center console, the one that has the a/c controls in it, and the guage cluster? If you painted the center console how did you paint around those little numbers for the fan controls? How do you take off the the pieces on the doors?

Heres some new pictures i took of the dash, i was bored and stripped the older paint and opted for a different color. I used
TS-38, 'Gun Metal'
I stripped the TS-42 Light Gun Metal with 'Easy Lift Off, ELO' which did the job nice and quickly without damaging the plastic.
You can't really tell the difference in colors by the pictures, but the TS-38 is quite a bit darker than the previous color that i had

Holy ****... very NICE!!! That's seriously the nicest interior job I've seen, great work! Does the meter hood and gauge cluster cover come apart or did you just mask the back piece to avoid getting paint on it?
