I've always just made my own, either out of aluminum plate (then brushed it) or plexiglass and either brushed it, painted it, put a mirror behind it, LED's tapped into the sides to light up the whole thing, etc, etc, pretty versitile and a lot more robust than those $20 cheap plastic holders like you have shown although they are quick and easy.

essentially yes. no brackets needed, it would use the existing factory mounting points and the radio cage would slide into the dash kit and you could bend your tabs from there.

correct. there should also be two tabs at the top to hold the radio in place.

The factory radio has two metal brackets which holds the assembly together. Aftermarket kits (Schoshe, Metra, AMI) are usually universal kits for several applications. That metal kit above is super rad. I have two of them at the shop, and they work really nice.

You still need to have the two thin tabs on either side of the radio, these are screwed into the actual dash panel and are molded into the S5 panel. The cutout for the radio in an S4 is larger than a double din (width wise), which neccessitates the two tabs on either side.

If you want a good dash kit, i recommend the metal one shown above. The Metra kit is a total PITA and will most likely break.
