double din FD head units?

So every double din head unit ive looked at on crutchfield.com claims it doesnt fit in the fd. But the fd has a double din openeing?

What gives? What exactly is the fitment issue? I know ive seen some of those head units installed in fd's before...

The main unit in question is the Alpine IVA-W505...

its not a double din. Two single ones. Have to create a bezel to install it. Most stereo shops has a custom fitter that can do it.

^Exactly
The plastic that separates the two decks, must be cut out. I made my trim ring out of aluminum. 1/4" thick textured black abs would look good and be easier to fab one out of.

The Kenwood does. That is what I have.

They say it doesn't fit b/c you need to trim the a/c panel between the upper din hole and bottom din hole

AVIC D2. Fits fine with a "cage". The problem is finding room to cram all the wiring in the back. I had to cut the stock metal support brackets to make room.

Yes my interior plastics are Montego Blue.

Anyone wanting to do this with an automatic car - its a fail. Stock automatic shifter will always obscure visibility.

Anyhoo, I just swapped my car to a 5 speed and its allllll good now.

I can't remember if his are actually silver carbon fiber or if the pieces are just wrapped in it. Try sending him a PM.

Here are pics of the Kenwood DNX5120 Navigation Receiver double din unit in my FD.

I really like this unit and the Garmin Navigation is excellent. It is on sale right now at Crutchfield for $599 which is $180 less than when I bought it in June of last year.

If you Google around and check Amazon, you might find it for less.

I bought the FD wiring harness adaptor from Crutchfield. The harness made wiring very easy since it matched color for color. Installation of the unit itself was easier than I expected. I didn't need to buy any special adaptors or install units. I just used the sleeve that came in the box. The trim piece around the unit was also included. I did buy the Ipod adaptor separately but didn't bother with the Bluetooth adaptor.

So if I have a Alpine xSi-W407, and I want it in my JDM FD, I'll have to let me audio guy know he'll have to custom fab it in?

Just trying to get ahold of the situation, so I have some kind of information to help him out haha

you could just buy this "kit" which will make your installation much easier

so all you do is mod the bins to be single and use the kit or is there still a problem with the deck not being secure? also does the bottom bin tray slide out or do u have to cut through it too?

The bottom pocket thing is removeable and slides out like the radio (uses same tool).

I just used the kit that came with it. Very secure. Hardest part is all the wiring inthe back interfering. I think you might need to cut the bracket like 7dust did.

looks like there are a few other Kenwoods that are being posted also.... cant say that it surprises me cause these things fit and look great. i recommend the touch screen . when your hand is on the gear shift its just a flick of the finger to move through the different screens you want to use.

Just thought I'd add to this thread. Just purchased and installed a Pioneer AVH-3200DVD double din unit in my FD. First off, this thing fit like a glove compared to a single din I had in there before with a lot more junk off the rear of the unit and the pocket below. It was more shallow in the rear which cleared the stock support bars without modifying. I had three sets of RCA's plugged in as well.

This is an entry level unit. No GPS but enough options for most people. Also, you are able to change the illumination to red which matches with the interior lighting as well. So the unit cost me $320 shipped off ebay. Little did I know that Pioneer does not provide even a cage/sleeve for install of these. The install kit is a totally separate deal which cost me another $50. The install kit had the metal sleeve and supporting brackets for the unit as well as the black plastic trim bezel to go around the unit. So the cost is more like $400 as an fyi. The last thing is, for some reason the trim bezel was 1/8" too small. It measured 6-7/8" across the inside. The Pioneer unit measures exactly 7". No way to stretch or make that work so I plan to do the dremel work tonite to make it fit. For $50 it should fit like a glove so I'm not impressed. Perhaps the older double DIN Pioneers are 6-7/8, I don't know. Thats it. All in all a good unit with enough options to satisfy most. I love that it has a cd opening that doesnt require the screen moving up/down or in and out. Very sleek and stylish unit. Sorry for no pics, I haven't installed my ac trim piece yet.

I took my JVC install one step futher than this. I glued the "surround" in place and filled in the gaps with bondo, then sanded and painted the whole panel and it looked like it came from the factory that way. Wish I still had pics. I have since gone to a single DIN with a storage bin underneath.
