DOT Approved Harnesses?
Here's my question of the day for you guys...
What racing/safety harnesses are DOT approved AND breakaway.
I don't want to get caught in a racing harness without a rollcage BUT I know that a few companies out there have breakaway harnesses that release on one side after the primary impact.
Anyone know of who makes these and where I might procure them?
Thanks,
-E

I could be wrong, but locally wearing a 5 point harness is illegal in a street car. The reason when asked was that they are too hard for people to get our of in cases of crashes. i know that sounds stupid, but that is what I was told. I know that harnesses carry SFI ratings (mostly) but I can't remember seeing any with a DOT approval.

Actually, I believe there is at least one maker that is DOT approved. At least that's what I've been told...and it has breakaway belts specifically so you don't get trapped in the upright position if you roll.

p.s. You may be right about the 5-pt. harness, but I'm looking for a three or four point.

I think Schroth makes some DOT-approved harnesses. I have been looking for a harness lately, too, and most of the reports I have gotten are that they work fine with the stock FD seat but are a PITA to use on the street. For anti-sub belts (5 or 6 point) you probably need to have a hole put in the seat, though I did get one report of someone using a 5-point without a hole. However, after looking how far my crotch is from the end of the seat it seems like a hole would be necessary for it to work well (in the seat, not my crotch). I plan to keep the stock seat belts to use on the street and get a good harness for track duty. The eye bolts that come with the Schroth harnesses can replace the stock seat belt bolts, which is nice.
I don't have any specific recommendations on what models are appropriate or where to buy them.

hee hee! Hole in the crotch
My harnesses will be coupled with sport seats, so hopefully that'll give me a configuration that works well.
Know anywhere I can get the Schroth's?

You can get the Schroth's at www.autotech.com and a few other places on the internet. I've been thinking about getting them for my '89 GXL, but can't figure out if they would fit or not. I'm probably going to get seats from an FD, so please let me know how they work out.

5 points harder to get out of? since when? I was running one in my eclipse for a long time, and you can get out of it instantly. You turn the ****, and poof, the whole thing falls off. If fact, you can use either hand, something that's slightly harder to do with most factory 3 points. Hell, if you have mouse belts (like in my eclipse AND my FC) you can get out easier from the 5-point because the door doesn't have to be open to escape from the shoulder belt (for example if your door got crunched in the crash and won't open)
