Custom Iphone / Ipod mount

im calling this a mount and not a dock because it wasnt designed to charge. i wanted to secure my Iphone short term for running the Dynolicous app. the app has a skidpad plot that lets you map your acceleration/braking/ and lateral gforces along a time line. i thought this would be something really cool for autocrossing so i needed a very secure out of the way but accessible location. for an accurate reading the app on has 2 criteria...the phone cannot move and it must be facing the direction of the car.

heres what i came up with(this is more of an idea share than a how to):

materials-

ashtray from f/s section
Arkon Iphone cradle(15$)
some sort of plastic
Devcon plastic welder 2 part epoxy

tools-

dremel
files
clamps
denatured alcohol
sandpaper

heres the cradle and the plastic i scrounged up(notice the back of the cradle)

i used the router attachment on the dremel to route out a seat for the cradle just deep enough to allow the plastic to sit nicely in the ashtray.....the space between the back of the cradle and the bottom of the ashtray is roughly the size of a DV tape case.

plastic welded together...scuffed all bonding surfaces with 50 grit and cleaned with denatured alcohol before epoxy.

used dremel and files to notch out the ashtray base just right for the cradle to sit nice and level

plastic welded everything together....the 2 sides of the cradle flex when inserting or removing phone so i didnt epoxy them

end result

Going to make a surround for that? It looks a bit unfinished.

It doesnt look good...

If you have a buddy, or own the first generation Iphone grab the plastic cover that came with it, and cut the corners with scissors.

i fail to see how thats secure....my car could flip and the phone isnt going anywhere.

if i covered it with a bezel i lose the quick release functionality and not to mention a potential loose piece.

i see where your coming from but the main point was a secure, out of the way but accessible mount to run the dynolicious app while autoxing.

Pretty neat trick however i would have tried to fab up something so it can go in the cigg lighter.

Having an ashtray or that there doesnt look good IMO.

I know its only for autox but even having an ashtray there doesnt look good.

Thats why i put in the JDM arm rest lol
