Cost to repaint the FD?

I have a 93 fd, needless to say the paintjob is very bad on it. It was originally silver.

I would love to get it repainted a glossy white color. Not pearl white, but the whitest white possible. I've been told that if I do that, the original paint will have to be completely stripped off which will wind up making the overall cost alot more than just repainting it silver like it originally was.

I really don't want to paint it silver like stock, but if it winds up saving alot of money then I'll probably just do it.

Can anyone give me an idea of how much a decent quality paint job would cost? Not show quality.

You can reduce allot of that cost by doing the prep work yourself.

I was quoted (by a good shop, that I've done business with before) to re-paint my FD red (from the original red) at around $3,000 & a paint change to black would add on about $500.

Costs vary alot by quality, car and even region. I think it should cost significantly more to change colors. If it doesn't I'd be concerned about quality.

check in the NE regional section. there's a go from the NoVa area that just got his car painted. you can pm him and ask about his shop and costs. costs definitely vary by region.

Thanks for the input.

Yeah I figured around 3k-4k. But that's 3k-4k I need in case my engine goes. The FD I have leaks oil, when I was attempting to put the DP on the chassis on the bottom was caked in oil, and there were oil spots on my garage floor.

I'm guessing an oil ring is going or something....kinda sucks. FD is about to become a daily driver because I'll have to sell my S2000 soon so I can buy a house.

I hope she holds it together for a while!

In case you havn't heard... a LOT of people claim that you can't DD an FD... well you can... peopl (including myself) do it. Just have a back-up beater car handy for when something goes wrong on the FD.

So, how would you feel having a nice new paint job on an FD with a blown motor that you can't afford to repair any time soon?

Just something to think about.

Leaking oil is not a sure sign of engine problems. I could be your oil pan, engine mounts or the turbo oil lines.

Last time I had the car painted, it cost me close to 5k! This included body work so, a straight paint job I'd say should'nt be more than 3.5k

Quality chemicals cost. PM r71 on here - he owns a body shop. My FD is there right now getting repainted again - it got hit. Mine was a color change originally.

I've called a few places in the area that are reputable for painting my car. All were close to the same, about 3.5-4k just for paint, body work added extra.

Indeed.

I have to have my DP installed by a local Mazda shop here. I would do it myself but I don't have the tools to do it without having to take a ton of stuff out. Plus I'm sure I'll break one of the bolts in the process.

Anyways, I was talking to them on the phone and the guy said it's probably just my oil pan, and that it is common. They are going to take a look at it anyways just to make sure. I hope it is just the oil pan.

Wow.. I feel like I am getting one hell of a deal. If you aren't going for show car why spend that much?? I am paying right around 1.2k for body work (a couple little dings) and fresh paint (VR) on my '94 Touring, this includes a warranty. I just took mine to Maaco, I'll post before and after pictures up later (if your interested). I drop my car off on the 18th and will be getting her back on the 24th or 25th. Only way I would really justify paying over 2k for a full new coat of paint is if I wanted custom **** done to it, and I was taking it to the best of the best in the region.

You live in Northern Va right??? Why not just take it to RP Performance in Manassas?? Those guys know their **** and are pretty cool people. I wouldn't trust a dealer even if my engine depended on it (especially if my engine depended on it)

Seriously, I drive up from Va Beach to take my FD to RP, you are a hell of a lot closer, and you will probably save money over dealership prices anyway..

That's where I'm taking it, lol. The guy I spoke to on the phone (his name escapes me now) was really nice.

I didn't even know they existed until I did some random searches on the interweb. Thank God I found them because I didn't want to drive all the way to Maryland to go to Peter Ferrell.

Hehe, PFS would have you waiting months to get in =P You probably spoke to Kyle or Bret on the phone. They are really cool people and very knowledgable. When I went in to have my 5th gear syncro rebuild they let me hang out in the shop and chit-chat for most of the day. If I lived up there I would swing by on a regular basis to help out and shoot the **** (so long as I didn't interrupt their work, Bret doesn't like that). RP are good people and they will def take care of you (Ex: the second day of the replacement a lady came in with her FC b/c the belts were making noise, even though her belts were hardly worn Kyle ran back and pulled the brand new (better) belt off his project FC to install on hers since they didnt have that particular belt in stock and didnt want to make her wait longer than needed.. they are def a good lot!)

Even though I could probably do it myself I think I will def head back up there to get my BNRs installed when (if) I buy them before I leave the country. Also, there is a great little cafe/deli within walking distance if you decide to wait and you get hungry. Ask Kyle, he will tell you how to get there.

Turns out the oil leaks are from a seal behind the flywheel, and from the oil pan. I also have a messed up intake gasket which explains my high idle.

They said it'll cost about 1200 to repair everything. I'm about to move so I can't really shell that out right now, so I'll have to wait until after I get settled into my new place.

I really cannot wait to get the gasket fixed though, I can't stand it idling so high.
