It all depends on how much work you want to do. If your comfortable with modifiying your stock boxes then you can fit up to 6.5"s. I'm running Boston Acoustic Proseries 5.4"s in my car. I cut out the Bose plastic boxes and molded some plastic putty stuff to fit the Bostons. I know you can modify them more to fit in 6.5"s and also I have a friend at a custom mobile sound shop that has made a custom box with a 6.5" a 4" and a tweeter all behind the factory door panel. Let me know if you have any more questions.

I'd like to know more I plan on buying a 3rd gen. RX-7 soon and I was hoping to put 6 1/2 or 6 3/4 component sets in. I would have the tweeter up and on the outside probably, so all I need to know is some info on the mounting for the 6" speaker in the door. I didn't know there was a box though, that's pretty nice...is it a completely sealed box? Would I just be able to use a Dremel to enlarge the hole?
Thanks,
Jon

I wouldn't recommend to use the stock bose box.
Its size only fits the bose speakers.
I would throw the whole stuff out and make a good adapter plate to fix the aftermarket speakers. Use the total door space. Be careful that around the speakers there's no hole to the membrane side to prevent acoustical shortcut.
As far as I have heard the dia is not the proplem in the FD, it's the depth. Know that there is a window the can be moved down when you have disassembled the door trim!
Happy working

What year convertible do you have? I have an 89, and am looking for door speaker info: depth specifically. I want to put 3-way kappa's in. Will they go?
Also, any info on the headrest speakers would be great. Size? Replacements? Leave out? What to do about them!?

i basically have put in the jl audio 653 components which are a tweeter...a 4 inch..and a 6.5 bass driver. it comes with a crossover network..it is a great sounding setup!! i put the 6.5 in the door where the old pineers go..i hooked up the 6.5 to the factory steroe and they get a tremendous amount of bas..low end too!! the 4 inch part goes right in where the factory holes allow..and they provide great sound. i mounted the tweeters and hooked them up to the crossover network so they wouldnt get lower frequencies. after all is said and done i am using the factory stereo to push all the speakers and it sounds great with the headrest speakers!! i have an 89 too and with the new speakers running off the old stereo setup..its basically 100 times better..and im sure its what they imagined the stereo would sound like but back then the technolgy was not good enough to provide enough lowend bass to give a great sound...but the jl 6.5s more than compensate for this!!
get these speakers if your gonna spend the money. after all you can always add an amp and the sound will just get better!! the sound quality is uncomparable!!
