I used some clearner/degreaser I bought at Kragen.
Drenched everything I could, then waited 5-10 min and washed off. Since it had NEVER been done before I had to repeat a few times.
The only drawback to having a white car, is the white engine bay

I recommend using Meguiar's All Purpose Cleaner Plus. And 303 Aerospace Protectant. Both can be found
here.
1. Warm engine up slightly (enough to loosen oil, grime etc... But not hot enough where it will burn you, or steam when water is applied.)
2. Cover any open intake, electronics etc... (If you think it might harm it cover it)
3. Wet engine down and apply Meguiar's All Purpose cleaner plus, let it soak in. Scrub any tough spots, then use the pressure washer at your local car wash, or your hose and wash away all cleaner, dirt, dust, etc...
4. Dry off all that you are able to get by hand then start your engine and let it idle to burn off any excess water.
5. Get a paint brush towels etc... And go over entire engine bay, tackling all crevices ensuring that you have it the cleanest you can.
6. Spray 303 Aerospace Protectant over, all hoses plastics, etc... Let it stand for about 5 mins then wipe off any excess.
7. Stand back and enjoy your clean engine bay.
If you keep up on it after that cleaning will be much easier. Also the 303 and Meguiar's can be used for a multitude of other things. (Meguiar's: interior carpet etc... 303: dash, tires, trim etc...)
Sorry so long

The best stuff I have found so far is CD2. It cleans amazingly with the help of a hose (make sure you cover up all electronics with plastic), and there is also a polish, hose conditioner. It makes the engine bay look fantastic and it takes like 25 minutes to do. They used to sell the stuff at advance auto, you may have to order it off line now though.

Get a steam cleaner...you know, one of those hand held steam cleaning devices? I heard those are amazing when it comes to tough jobs. Maybe mix, too - spray on on that cleaner and use the steam thing to get it off. I think that would really work. They sell for like $30 at Sears or WalMart
