The other option I've been considering is the Alpine 6-CD changer that's MP3 compatible. You'll need the controller as well but it lets you keep the stock head unit as it has an FM modulator. I'm Mr. Indecisive however as I know there's something better around the corner (there always is with electronics). I'm sort of holding out on a DVD-R compatible player that'll also read MP3 tracks. With a 4.7gig disk, I could literally store thousands of songs on one disk. That way I could just leave the 100 CD carrying case at home and eliminate 50lbs. from the car. :-)
One thing I've heard from one of the better car stereo shops in town is that Eclipse, the new units, has the hardware/encoder to play MP3, but not the software end of it. It's flash ROM upgradeable, meaning they could send you a disk that would upload the necessary software and you would be MP3 ready. Being an upper end audio product, they're not in a rush to do the Mp3 thing however. IMHO, their layout/design/ergonomics are the best in the biz.

AFAIK, there is no in-dash MP3 compatible head unit that plays MP3's off of a DVD-R disk. There are some that will read DVD movies and play MP3's off of CD-R/RW, but none off of DVD-R sigh...It may be an encoding problem as I believe DVD uses a different color laser than CD. Who knows...I guess the other solution would be to buy one of the units with a built-in hard drive. I'm willing to bet that there are long-term reliability issues with those units however. Sure, your HD in your desktop has lasted for 5 years, try sticking it on your car's dash and setting your Tien's on 16 :-)

I use the Archos 20 GIG MP3 Player/recorder. Its tiny fits in the 3rd gen ashtray spot and you just use the line out to the line in on the head unit.
very convenient.
