Carbon Fiber Interior

Hey guys... I was working on all of my carbon fiber parts for the most part of the day yesterday. I just wanted to post and let you all know that I will be done very shortly. I know I said this before but since then I have had a few problems that I worked through. I am hoping to have pictures up this week. I am very excited. When the interior is finally back in my car... its is going to look SWEET!!!

Hey Mike Ryan was telling me you were having a problem getting it to shine up. If you need any help I'd be more than willing. I work with finishes all day and could suggest a few options if you need the help. Dave

I dont have a problem getting the finish to shine. I just have a problem wiht the final coat of resin/hardener. It turns out very glossy but I always get air bubbles. I tried using a torch to get them out but no dice. Right now Im really close to the end. All I have to do is sand the air bubbles out... and then I think Im gonna take it to a nearby bodyshop or have another forum member spay automotive clear on it. I might even just buy an airbrush for this. Im just worried that the auto clearcoat will have a duller finish than the resin. I was gonna take pictures yesterday but my boss is out of town and he took the digital camera with him!!!! Looks like you guys are just going to have to wait.. haha.

BTW... feel free to give me any suggestions for the final finish.

You can polish the auto clear coat just as weel as the resin. You shouldn't have any problems.

The doors and Shift console are done. It looks badass!!!! There are some minor inperfections that I am just going to live with. I want to just get everything back in place to see if they are even noticable. I cant wait to get a hold of a digital camera and start putting my car back together. Everything will be done this week. This is more exciting than when I first got the 7.

Mike,
If you are getting air bubbles it because it is drying to fast. When resin hardens some of the chemicals evaporate and must work there way to the surface. If it drys before they can escape you get air bubbles. Use slower drying resin, with the hotter weather it's only going to get worse.

mkoch1,

Is it a matter of mixing it more carefully? Does the torch still help? Also, he's gettin some fish-eyes. What is the best prep/bonding agent?

Heres what i did to the console. I think there are a couple more pics in the link at the top but they were a little bigger and I didnt want to take up too much space. Sorry to you 56K guys. Anyways this is still a work in progress. Im going to get it all buffed up nice enough to put in the car by saturday I hope(Maybe not the AC panel though).

I could not put a price on this...... it was a major PIA and Im still not done!! The supplies were probably $130. Im sure If I gave it another try and had the right supplies(vacuum bag) ....and someday I might..... the pieces would come out soo much better.

OK,

This looks promising. Is there a primer on how to make carbon fiber parts anywhere on the web?

Thanks
