But overall a lot of ricers just over-use CF (and some even have FAKE CF for God's sake!) simply because they THINK it makes them faster, much like all their decals stuck to the windows do. As for lowering the weight....let's take your Eclipse example. So let's say you cut 40 pounds (which you won't, but let's say it anyway) from the car's weight.
Wow....that means it will be .000014 quicker in the quarter and gain perhaps .23 mph on the top end.
When CF became de rigueur for the juvenile crowd following TFATF, it lost its appeal to most.

The stock hood on a 3rd gen is aluminum and isn't very heavy at all. Depending on the layup of the CF it could actually come out heavier if not done right. Very little weight savings unless you have very large air scoop holes that reduces the amount of material. I'll have to guess you have actual weight differences from the stock hood to the aftermarket CF ones ?

 

if you're referring to the FD hood weights: 21lbs (or thereabouts) for stock.

on average you'd drop about 7lbs using FRP and maybe 8lbs using wet carbon.

for a 1lb loss, you'd have to be an ultra-hardcore circuit racer to justify using CF for weight concerns. (of course, if you were that hardcore, you'd be using dry carbon, saving a touch more weight, and spending a hell of a lot more money...)

as for the 'sills' (aka scuf/scratch plates) - scratched CF has got to look worse than scratched aluminium. Anyone got any experiences with these? (or the similar ones made by feed, amemiya, trial, etc)

I know nothing about molding CF etc. but I kind of like the look, at least on the sill plates. And I wondered the same thing about scratches in the clear-coat. Is it possible to make a CF mold around a core of the OEM plastic plates, leaving the strip of plastic exposed at the ridge where it goes over the pinch welds on the car? Probably a really stupid idea, just wondering how you could minimize the scratches over time.

My apologies. I was talking about a stock hood on a 2nd Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX. stock weight is about 40lbs, the C/F hood I replaced it with is about 25lbs. So it's a good weight loss. Plus I didn't feel like working out everytime I lifted the hood on my GSX.

we are redoning the molding on this. 2-3 more weeks have in stock.

 

I own a set....I believe rotary extreme made them for a while.
I hope these ones have a stronger clear coat...because scratching is 100% an issue, and it is difficult to get them out....

 

I really don't understand why people who invest in these (or any door seals other than the stock plastic ones) are concerned with scratches. If scratches are an issue don't get them. That's like having a rug at your front door and not expect to get mud/grass/debris on it (unless you use your backdoor or a window as your main point of entry). If you use your car on a simi-regular basis, expect them to get scratches (unless you enter through the hatch).

And why can't you guys get in and out of a vehicle without scratching the door sills? Take 2 extra seconds and a little effort and lift you damn foot completely over it before stepping out....oh, and stop kicking the damn door panels as well while getting out
