Car audio guys... Subs, Ported or Sealed? What's the applications for either?
So after much googling and asking of nearby car audio "experts" everyone seems to have their own opinion, not FACT.
What the **** is the difference between a ported box and a sealed box, and when to use either?
I'm speaking in terms of the bass heavy rap subs...
Ive had some tell me ported boxes are for SUVs and sealed boxes when the subs are in your trunk, to ported boxes go in cars/trunks. Some say the ported boxes have harder hitting bass, while sealed boxes are more for "punch" (like bass drums)
What is the true purpose for either. When do you use a ported box and when to use a sealed box?
I hope I formulated that question correctly...
Thanks,
Jonathan

sealed are boomier, ported have better response. Best of both worlds is a single-action bandpass (speaker installed between one side that's ported and one that's sealed) but it's not as pretty.

Yeah, shutup kid.
A sub in a sealed box will also handle more power, it controls cone movement better. Ported box needs to be bigger, not good if space is an issue. In my daily driver ('92 bmw 318 convertible) I had to use a ported box and run the port into the back seat to get good bass since there were 2 layers of metal between the back seat and the trunk.

Yeah, shutup kid.
Same sub, same wattage, the cone of the sub in the ported box will be moving farther. The sealed box puts some resistance on the cones movement, so it can handle slightly more power before overextending and popping.
