Can Rust Grow During Storage?

If you have rust spots, do they get worse even if it is stored and not getting wet and or salty?

Well, Minnesota Winters are pretty dry. So maybe it won't grow as fast during a dry winter than a humid summer?

The rust will spread but not very much if you make sure to have it clean and maybe spray some rust inhibitor. Rust is a chemical reaction so the lower temps slow it down.

how small are the spots? take a sander to it and sand it all off. then treat it with cleaner, rust converter and inhibitor. finally primer and paint. doesn't have to be pretty. just effective.

You would be amazed at how moist winter storage can get. Any slight change in temperature will cause condensation to form on the metal of the car, especially underneath. Some days, it is inconsequential. Other days, it can be so wet that it will rain under the car. Foggy winter days are the worst since the night was very cold and the morning was hot, so lots of moisture condenses on the car and any metal.

Any exposed metal should be treated. Scrape or grind off all rust, prime and paint. If you can't go that far, at least scrape off the loose rust and then smear some grease over it.

Allright, i had to post these pics of my rust trouble spots. These are from the car in my Avatar. I'll post the major ones first. The white spots are just wax, these pictures were taken right after a wax job so its stuck in the rust spots. These first 2 are the same spot, just the second one is when the rust fell off.

Here are all the minor spots

Here is the underbody. It looks actually pretty good compared with the rest of the car. The only concern I have here is toward the outside, and frame rails.

Is this even worth trying to repair with sanding and bondo? Or should I keep my eye open for a shell in the future?

My friend that is more thena rust spot That is a lot of work to be done. I dont work at a body shop but I think it would be wise for you to keep an eye out for a good shell. Good Luck

You sir need a clean and rust free parts car from either the south or from a warmer and less snowy climate. That is not minor rust...thats an epidemic!

i do work at a body shop theres no reason to put that body in storage. to fix that car u would probaby need a donar car and it would be alot of work, better off finding a car w good body bad engine, if ur motor is in good shape. good luck

Well I wansn't planning on actually storing it for the winter because it's in great shape. But it might be sitting in the garage be cause of the broken bolt problem I've been having. So I was wondering if its gonna get worse quick sitting there. But it seems like the concensus is that this thing is a pile of rust.

looks like an average minnesota old car. supposedly, if you park your car over something ie blankets, it should slow the infection and there will be less of a mildewey smell on ur seats and carpet than parking on the concrete. but then again that could just be some minnesota hopeful myth.

The amount of money required to repair your car would be more than purchasing a vehicle with no rust. And if it is repaired there is a small chance it will come back if not repaired properly. Your best bet is to sell the car (save money now) and purchase a none rusty car. Just my 2 cents. Or keep this car as your winter car.. and purchase a nice non rusty car for summer.

wow, thats alot of rust

btw, rust is a catalyst for its own formation. Which means its basically car cancer. I would sell that and get an fc with a nice body. Cheers
