Building a pc for my 7
Very nice. I think it is a great way to add a lot of modern features to the car without ruining the simple layout of the dash. I am thinking about doing the same thing, but need to take some time to get up to speed on what's available first. What software are you going to use?

I've had the computer running on my desk at work for about a month. It comes with an AC adapter so you can run it anywhere. I also bought a Wireless USB adapter so I can get on the network at the shop for file transfers and downloads.

looks awsome! nice project, i want to do the same thing but with the infill g4 its a double din 7" screen and the computer is right behind the screen, mainly use it for datalogging, gps, and music. its pretty pricy tho at $2100 http://store.mp3car.com/MP3Car_G4_po..._p/sdk-014.htm
oh i was going to ask if you tried placing the comp case in the passenger side bin? i didn't know the dims of the unit but i thought it would be a good place. plus you can run everything up the center console to the screen.
guys i just got the screen mounted i have some pics that i took at work while doing it...
first i put the screen on the back of the dash piece and centered it, then i used the glue gun to glue the screen on from the back, i only put glue on the sides. then i let it dry for 10 mins....after i went to check on it the screen was on there really good nice and solid.....the glue gun works great.......here are some pics.
so to day after work i stopped at best buy and bough 15 foot of vga cable and 10 foot usb cable male to female....also a radio harness..for the radio harness i will be adding about 15 feet of each color wire to the hatch along with the vga and usb cable since im gonna be mounting the pc next to my battery in the hatch(i relocated the battery to the back)...im also gonna be runnig a usb hub right in the front for multy use...ill take more pics and post as i go......

i thought about that but the cp really needs to breath.. and that bin is a lil to thin for the pc.......so i think im gonna mount it in the hatch right next to my battery...it will be easy for me to power the pc since my battery is in the hatch.....
Hey so i was wondering, newer cars can control there climate control through there touch screen I know this may be a different kind of software but that would be pretty awesome to get rid of the climate controls and mount some gauges up there. Also a complete list would be great I would love to replicate this system the idea is awesome.

Nice work. For those of you (and me) that are electronically challenged and can't make your own carputer, www.mp3car.com is the place to go. I've been looking at the Infill G4 for quite some time. Have always wanted a media center that would play satellite radio, be a navigation system, and also hook directly to my Haltech EMS. An Internet option was attractive to me because I wanted to download directly from the car my data logs to my home PC without using a laptop for the transfer. The G4 does this and more. I've held off though because when I went to the Infill G4 forum, the early users were pissed as the product did not work as advertised. Go figure, a Windows Vista based system not working? Hard to believe right?
The responses from the support guys were pretty bad also. Basically "you must be doing something wrong silly user". As a former owner of a software company, I feel these responses are unacceptable. So, I'm still waiting for things to stabilize.
For those of you that are making your own PCs, how will you handle the shut down of the PC? Obviously, you don't want to lose power to the PC when you turn off the car. Are you able to build in some type of gentle shut down for the PC?
Finally, anyone tried an Intel-based Apple MAC mini? Seems like the perfect product for this application.

Controlling the HVAC system from a PC would require more than just software. You would need digital to analog convertors to send the correct voltage to the the HVAC circuits. You would also need to write custom software to provide a decent control interface. It's certainly doable, but would not be trivial.
