Title says it all. Currently running Polk EX components off an Alpine CDA-7875 for mid/highs. I do plan on getting an amp for them later and im not looking to add a bunch of weight so am only going for one sub. Any recommendations?

I'm running the exact same deck and speaker setup in my car right now. I don't like the Polk speakers though. I'm going to replace them with some MB Quart 6/4/tweet components. Right now I've got an older Rockford DVC 12" in a custom box with a 250 watt Rockford amp pushing it right now, and it's decent for what it is(it was free too). For sound quality, I like JL Audio 12W3's or some of the MB Quart subs. It's mostly personal preferance. Best thing to do is go to a decent shop(not a Best Buy or Circuit City) and listen to each one for yourself. One thing that's a must is a custom box built to the subs specs if you want sound quality.

eclipse titanium 12" should work well. the magnet is pretty heavy though.

 

Sounds good. I'm probably ditching the polks soon as well but I'd like to get this done now. I was kind of thinking of going with a JBL sub since thats what I have in my home theater. I forget the series but frequency response was like 18-150hz or something like that.

Before buying anything, check the DEI studio subwoofers, and best of all is that they are not that expensive.

Eh, I was working at a Car Toys for a while selling, and did a good amount of listening. None of the JBLs I listened to sounded that great, even the $800+ GTi's sounded pretty bad.

The Infinity Perfects are clean sounding subs, but you should use at least 300 watts rms to keep from frying it.

 

I know for a fact that DEI Neo. Studios are some of the best bang-for-your-buck speakers out there. Don't know a thing about the subs though.

Nakamichi will yield absolutely *amazing* SQ results with their subs. However, you're definitely going to sacrifice some punch if you use them. It depends heavily on what you're listening to as well.

IDQ subs are also fantastic and IMO give a good balance between punch and SQ. Go to souddomain.com and look around a bit. They tend to carry a little higher-end stuff than a place like Crutchfield, which is also great in it's own right.

hmm...think I might go with the IDQ 10". I'm rather new at this so would there be a difference between 2 and 4?
Also what amp would be a good combo for the IDQ 10"?

 

You mean 2 or 4 ohms, or 2 or 4 subs. I assume the former?

I'm pushing my IDQ 12" with a Phoenix Gold XS2300, but there are a number of great amps out there that'll push it fine, but as benhart mentioned, make sure you've got enough juice getting to it...don't want to under power it (on the other hand, there's no need to max it out either).

Back later w/ the 2/4 ohm diff. Too much wine and not enough sleep for now.

lol. Sorry about that, I did mean the difference between 2 and 4 ohm. I'm definitely only going with one sub.

 

yeah, the eclipse drivers are very expensive. but that is my #1 recommendation.

if you have any hookups with mainstream electronics stores, i would seriously recommend checking out the infinity kappa perfect subs. i think they are coming out with a new model with dual voice coils. very crisp, clean response.

if you are on a budget, the dei and idq subs are your best bet.

pheonix gold amps are excellent, but if you are on a tight budget, i would recommend taking a look at the options available from alpine's revised v12 series or some of mtx's lineup. if youre lucky, you might be able to get a hold of some clearance priced alpine v12 amps from the older series.

 

I concur. Good advice. Though the IDQ's are only about $50 shy of the Perfects (depending on where you buy them). Point being...don't go too cheap if you want SQ. rxspeed, correct me if I'm wrong.
