Appropriate (subtle) head unit recommendation?

I'm looking for a head unit (I guess I don't have the bose system) that will match the other lighting in my stock interior (i.e. red illumination), and is basically all black. Any recommendations?

Go to Best Buy or something and look at their head units in person. Anything pioneer, Alpine, or higher end sony will be good. I would also recomend some new speakers.

since you're in San Diego, go to tweeter. They have a huge selection. Just don't let them install it, they use cheap installation kits.

They're going to be hard to find now since Nakamichi no longer is a presence in the U.S. market, but check out their CD-400 model. Best bet to find one would be on eBay.

Otherwise, look up Alpine's models. I just put in an inexpensive (~$200) CDA-9847 in my Turbo II. Has "Quad Illumination" and amber is one of the options.

Why dont you just buy one off ebay from a different Mazda to retain a stock look. Their are numerous Mazda styles which fit our radio harness. Thats what I did.

Bringing back an old thread....who's used a stock head unit from a later model mazda in their FD? I have an 03 Mazda protege and the head unit opening looks like it is the same size, want to know what others have done.

Will this fit in an FD?:

http://cgi.ebay.com/2002-Mazda-Prote...QQcmdZViewItem

I'm not into superb audio performance, I just want something that will look stock, and do what it's supposed to do without spending an assload of money.

Thanks!
Chris

I am also interested in finding a stock head unti from another mazda that will fit properly to keep the stock look, if it is even possible.

Here is one of those Nakamichi CD-400. Damn, this actually is a very "stock" looking head unit. 350 on ebay......

I have a Clarion head unit (not sure of the model number but i can find out if you want) that fits perfect with the interior lights of my FD...it has 760 (or something like that) colors to adjust from, fits perfect and i can snap a couple of pics if you want!

Ramy -

That's exactly what I'm looking for...is it a direct replacement for the stock head unit?

All the best,
Chris

WAIT!

Doesn't Japan use WAY different FM frequencies than north america, making a JDM deck useless for radio here?

WIKIPEDIA

Throughout the world, the broadcast band is 87.5 to 108.0 MHz (or some portion thereof: in the U.S. it is 87.9 to 107.9 MHz). Japan is the only exception, using exclusively its own unique 76 to 90 MHz band with 0.1 MHz channel spacing.
??

Otherwize, that HU would be great, because i listen to the radio alot.

It does depend on what stations you listen to...not everything will be crystal clear. But having said that, my Skyline came w/ a "JDM" (lol) Sony deck, and I could still listen to the radio in the US just fine...
