Anyone know the point of doing this to a car?!

Sure, I wouldn't do it to my car, but that is MY car. And it does make my car more rare, so thats fine. And there could be worse things done to a Rx-7, like letting some newly liscensed 16 year old, who watched Fast and the Furious, have it. Yikes.

It reminds me of how the saying for the Pontiac Montana goes: "it looks like they had one development team for the front, and one development team for the back, and neither communicated to each other".
