anyone build a sub box out of fiberglass? i need info on the techniques to do this

ive read people using fiberglass to fab a sub box especially in the storage bins for fcs. i want to do this in my vert. ive used fiberglass before but never in this thick of an application. just looking for input on the best way to get a structurally sound 3/4 inch of fiberglass in the shapes that i need.

First, before you waste your time, use the search function and search on subs in the bins (as a hint they suck on the FC and FD there).

#2 if you still are determined to waste your time and build a fiberglass enclosure there, you will need some styren foam, shape it the shape you want, cover it in a thin tight layer of plastic wrap, and then cover that in multiple layers of fiberglass and resin.

Then once it is hardend, sand down the top surface, so you have a nice smooth surface to mount the sub onto, cut a hole through, and drop a small amount of acetone into the styren foam to melt it out of the interior of the fiber glass enclosure. Make sure you don't use too much acetone or it will start disolving the resin as well.

Then mount and figure out how much time you wasted making a enclosure for a poor sounding subwoofer location in the FC.

yeah i do to....i shouldve posted that i already did a search but couldnt find what i wanted...but seeing as how icemark always has info and always helps out when he dont have to...i cant exactly take offense.

so the general consensus is that using fiberglass for the sub boxes sucks? even in my vert where theres no other space?

Well, you also have to keep in mind that convertibles are not exactly the best candidates for producing sound quality. I have never heard of a convertible used to win automotive sound competitions.

I would just stick w/ the standard locations for audio equipment.

I suggest you talk w/ a audio shop experienced w/ building show cars. They can give you advice on where and how to mount your audio equipment.

No no no ... sorry I wasn't clear... its not the fiberglass. Fiberglass done right make wonderful enclosures!!!

Its the location.

The bin area on the FC3S and to some degree the FD sucks for a enclosure. It can be used, but you will need twice the speaker and twice the power to get even marginal decent bass from that area.

again on the coupe you are much better off building a small enclosure in the back corner (like between the shock tower and back of the truck), or removing the spare and building a glass or (if you are a glutton for punishment) MDF encluosure there. You would even be better off raising the floor and mounting the woofer anywhere behind the shock towers.

But in front of the shock towers will never sound as half as good.

So its not the material.. its the location on the coupes.

The FC3C (the 'vert BTW) doesn't have the same accoustical problems that the FC3S and FD have in that area, because of the shape of the interior. I am actually on my second gen fiberglass box for the area in the 'vert between the spare and the front cover.

I have most of the bugs out and should be able to make a mold pretty soon to dump out a half dozen fiberglass enclosures for there that will hold either an 8" or 10" in a single band pass config.

i want to keep the spare in there will your setup allow this? as far as the coupes i know what your saying about location. in my old 86 i had 2 12s in a non custom vented enclosure. after trying to face the subs many ways i found the best result was to face them directly at the rear hatch of the car. about 6-8 inches from the hatch..parallel to its shape, just pounding directly at the glass the angle of reflection and compressed airspace there made it really hit the low resounding bass. this tripled the bass as opposed to facing them directly at the back of my head. i guess its the same priciple as the 7th order enclosure.

i still want to find a few good fglass sites to really read up on some of the stuff i might not know yet..the endless search continues...maybe ill try www.fiberglassclub.com, like www.rx7club.com except pertaining to fiberglass..i hope it works..lol...and is as informative too...

yeah my enclosure will fit with both the spare and a full size tire wheel in there.

I don't believe in giving up function for sound
