you can go down to your local parts store and buy the spray on tint used for turn singals brake lights etc, that is what i used to lightly tint my turn signals

There is a Japanese company that has a tinting spray. I dont know the name but the can has an old school Audi on it. This stuff is 10x better than the Night Shades spray.
Check on the VWVortex forums. Those guys tint their taillights and markers all the time. They get great results too!

jesus, dont go thru all that hassel. you can ask a favor from a local macco guy, or buy a really good clear coat, like from house of colors. first, clean the lenses very well, tape all the surrounding area, or just take them off, spray flat black paint from at least 4 feet away and in light tones. after it dries, apply the clear to maintain a high gloss that will not fade. and makes for a great scratch guard.

I used night shades to tint the taillights on my old car... here are pics:
Thats like 7+ coats of nightshades (tails were originally bright red, white, and orange) and 2 or 3 clear coats (i cant remember, its been a while)
The nightshades works really well
