any one uses Alpine heads?????

I bought the Alpine CDA-7894, and it tells me NOT to use the stock power lead - it wants me to tap power directly from the battery...

is it really necessary?? I am only driving a pair of kenwood 6.5 at the back and 4" component at the front (I have an 87T2)

thanks for your input...

I bought that same head unit (haven't installed it yet, let me know how you like it!) and the reason they tell you not to use the stock power lead is because it has a massive internal amp. 60W, I think. Most head units are around 25W. This puts its current draw in the range of many smaller 4-ch amps. I would think that you *could* use the stock Mazda wiring, but I'd be very careful about turning the volume up too loud. If you end up blowing too many fuses, then I would go ahead and tap off the battery.

Hi guys,

in the new autohifi 1/2003 that is published tomorrow we've tested the 7894. It produces 4x 15,5 watts (1% dis, 13.8V). Years ago that would have been a phantastic output for a headunit. But today that's normal.
Do not trust the watt-specifications. They are usually just-before-dead-sounds-terrible values.

So there should be no problem to use the Mazda wiring for the Alpine. Worst case you willl need a new fuse.

personal experiance run the wire
most stock power and grounds don't have enough current capability.
it will sound better with a good power and ground.
don't forget to use your crossovers
alpine's 60x4 heads are great
and their rms is 27watts x 4
you can run power from main battery wires that goto ignition switch.
ground to frame

thank you for all your input. I got a RF amp wire kit and will run power from the battery to the head...

now....what's the easiest way to connect a 10awg wire to a 20 awg wire???

And what's that little black cap for in the picture? It's part of the kit...

Ha, who says that? 27W x 4! Lol
The /////ALPINE tech. data sheet?!
We've testet it and it never has 4 x 27 Watts, and not RMS! Only the 4 x 15,5 Watts.
The new Blaupunkt San Francisco CD72 produces incredible 4 x 26 Watts (13.8 V, 1 % dis), but not the Alpine.

I really would try it with the stock wiring before spending time and money for a useless bigger wire.

The black cap in the middle might be to be put in a drilled hole to protect the wiring.

Hi,

no, the Alpines have usually better sounding cd sections than the Blaupunkt.

Don't care how much power the headunits have.
Usually they have around true 10-15 Wattes per channel. The Blaupunkt has incredible 27 watts, yes, but that is a real exception.

By the way: To get a physical 2 times louder signal (+3dB), you need twice the power. To be heared 2 times louder you need about +10dB, that's 10 times the power.
So let's say you have the 15 watts. 30 watts are 3dB louder, but you need 150 watts that sound 2 times louder! So don't care whether your headunit has 15 or 20 or 30 watts. Of course more is better. But to get really better performance buy an external amp. And this amps usually sound much better than the high power ics.
