Exclamation Another Spraygun question

Hey i was just reading another hvlp spraygun thread and was reminded of a question i never thought to ask here. My fc has some severe fading on the hood and roof. the rest of the car i is decent and still has clearcoat. i am looking for a cheap diy solutions till i can afford a real paintjob. I talked to a few pros and was told i can get away with spraycan priming (thin and even)the bad areas and scuffing the clearcoat with 600 grit and then spray the whole car over the exact color with attention to the primed areas and just a once over on the ok areas. Im not sure if i explained this right but , it makes sense to me. I have 2 bottom fed spray guns that came with my compressor that are basically ****. Can anyone recommend a decent cheap hvlp gravity feed gun that will get this job done? I am not worried about long term quality just, a 1 or 2 time use thing.

if all it is is fading, just buff it out. If you need more than that, you can sand with 800 grit, than clear coat. Not the best method, but it works and will look good for at least a few years (till it starts chipping)

Exclamation

U dont understand the severity. The hood and roof are faded to the points of white primer/ bare metal. They must be primed and painted. If i dont get any suggestions im probably gonna go with the porter cable psh1, seems decent.

What fluid tip is in the porter cable gun? Seeing how you want one gun to do primer, paint, and clear you will want a mid sized tip. I would look at somthing like this... http://www.autotoolmart.com/cgi-bin/...42104181581.78
Get the 1.5 fluid tip and you should be fine.

How much were you quoted to have your FC completely repainted? As for the spray gun, DeVilbiss is a good gun and affordable.

DeVilbiss is a bit higher than I think he wants to spend, also I havn't been 100% happy with the quailty for the money from them. I find Sata to be a much better gun but then agian we are talking the higher priced guns.

Paint related question. Figured i'd ask here instead of start another thread.

When can clear be applied? at any time during the painting? I mean can you paint the color coat, let it dry completely and then spray the clear another day? with just a lite sanding to adhere?Or does it need to be applied after the normal flash time.

I am painting a motorcycle now and am doing pieces seperatly. and some need more repair than others. So i am painting at different times. ( Everything is primed, just not doing it all at once)

Thanks for any help guys.

Dave

It's best to spray within 24hrs with most paints, but it should say on the can. If you wait longer you will have to make sure you scuff the surface well (automotive scotch bright pad) before applying anymore paint/clear.

Thanks man.
I just got done sprying down 2 coats of color and it looks pretty good so far. In the morning i will evaluate tthe finish and lay down some clear if all is good. That would be about 18 hours from now. If i have to scuff it would you recommend another color coat or just clear it? would the scuffing show thru on the clear? I don'tthink i am thinking clearly... been in the booth too long

I am using Dupont single stage NASON paint. ( sunburst yellow) It says it can be resprayed at any time. ( not specific about scuffing and time periods. It is full dry though overnight.)

Sorry for the ?'s.. haven't cleared anything before. Just did enginebays and small things that didn't require the finish clear creates. It is fun learning though. The prep is a biatch.. I know now why people charge a lot for paint jobs

Single stage paint is usualy not cleared, or at least I havn't come across a single stage that is. Single stage is called that becuase thats it it's a single stage paint system. So unless the directions on the nason specify that it can be cleared I would be careful doing so. If you lightly scuff the surface clear over it shouldn't be a problem. But if you cause any imperfections that seem to worry you, then go with your gut and respray.

That's what i was trying to tell the guy. He brought the paint and clear. I said exactly that. "single stage is called that because it is all in one" He argued and the customer is always rite

I also called the local paint guru and they said you could do it but that is why you got single!Haha!! As you said go with your gut. I looked at the job that i did earlier and there are just a few imperfections. I am sanding them tomorrow and re-spraying color.

IMO i don't think i am going to clear it. My engine bay turned out great and that was a single stage metallic. Just need to get a good even coat tomorrow...and no little knats that always seem to get into the booth when i go in and out between coats

Thanks again for the helpfull info. And sorry bout the highjacking of the tread
