To all the audiophiles out there

What kind of component speakers do you guys recommend for the fronts? I know that there are 5 1/4 in the fronts but has anyone had any luck with 6 1/2 with some type of enclosure in the doors. I want good clean midbass response and I really didn't want to put in kick panels since the space is so tight.

Additionally does anyone have infinity perfect 10's? I was thinking of putting those in the hatch. I don't want to take up the entire space therefore I was looking for a sub that would go in a small sealed enclosure. I just want a little bump to round out the sound not to be obnoxious.

There is a audio section I'm sure they will move this over to.

But to kinda answer your question with my own opinion, if you care about getting power out of your car dont waist money on audiophile speakers cause your not going to hear them real well enough to justify audiophile grade speakers.

Stephen makes a good point, the auditory environment in an FD is not exactly conducive to high quality sound....

You can fit shallower 6.5 inch drivers in the fronts (non-Bose system). If the speakers are too deep, they will hit the window/rail.

I find the JL Audio subs to be some of the most musical subs and these work well in a sealed box. You don't need a large sub to get down into the low 20 Hz range in the small FD cabin. A single good quality 8 or 10-inch will play very low and quite loud. (My comments do not apply to rap fans who like rattling the windows across the street -- but you mentioned audiophile so....)

Ryanberg covered my post perfect and hit the nail on the head with a system description. I have a set of the bottom line Boston Acustics in the doors with a 10" JL audio sub and a 4 channel (100watts per channel) amp. I run one channel to each door speaker and bridge the other 2 for the sub.

It sounds fine, its nice and loud so I can hear it on the highway with my sunroof open. BUT, its not what I would call audiophile by any stretch of the imagination. Like I said, going audiophile would be a waist cause there is too much noise, you cant take advantage of the "audiophile" speakers.

I save the audiophile stuff for my home hehe

This is my opinion anyway.

I'll try to hijack it back onto topic then

I posted this a while ago:

I probably should have done the wrong thing and put it in the 3rd gen section

To save you the reading, what speakers specifically (brand, size, series/model) are you guys putting in the front ? And more importantly (for my cause and traric's) what are you doing to fit them in?

I have the non-bose system in a '95, BTW. I'm hoping to drop something in the front without much modification to the car (so I can go back to stock if I REALLY have to)... but I'm desparate for info now, so any info would help. Dont mind modifying speakers though... screw them.

I did get get a PM about some 6.5" Inf. Kappas that fit after some cutting to the car's baffle... what about 5.25"'s?

Speaking of shallow mounting depth, www.autotoys.com has some "Lanzar" speakers that feature "shallow mounting depth". I'm not familiar with that brand, but thought I'd bring it up.

Thanks again,
-IG

6.5 should fit the front door ones. I have 6.5 in the front on mine and they fit fine and still use the stock grils.

don't bother with the 5.25's, 6.5's are the most acoustically perfect speaker is what I was told by a number of car audiophiles, including owners of installation bays and stores. If you want decent sound for under $1000, I would go with the audiobahn 3 way component setup up front, and a 600 watt RMS 2-channel driving them, no rear speakers, and 1 lanzar optidrive 12 triplemagnet with the 2ohm DVC, probably would get a 500 watt RMS amp for that, but make sure it's 1 ohm stable, nobody's happy when an expensive amp blows. If anyone in the Fredericksburg, VA area needs a/v equipment installed in your car, or just good deals on av/ equipment, pm me, and then teach me how to use pm.

oh, and if the 6.5's are too thick, just use spacers and then get bigger grills.

go with infinity kappa components and a Kicker S10L7 in a small sealed box. This will give you the bump and then some!

If you've converted your garage into a studio-quality listening room, I suppose you could pull your car in, roll down the windows and enjoy those perfect 6.5s. Short of that, even with a stock car you are talking about such minute differences that you will never notice them over wind noise, road noise, motor sounds, etc. If you add in the sound of my catback and airpump mooing, I'm lucky to hear anything! ;-)

Seriously...unless I'm in the wrong forum and we're actually talking about BMW 7-series or something, the kind of audiophile-quality components you're talking about are a waste of good money IMO. I do believe in getting a certain level of decent equipment, but there is a point of diminishing returns, and in a fairly loud auto environment, you hit that point pretty quickly.

There are a LOT of good separates out there to choose from - CDT Audio, MB Quart, Focal, Boston Acoustics, Dynaudio, Rainbow, Diamond Audio, etc., and you'd be happy with any one of these sets. If you can, try auditioning speakers at the local car stereo store and pick what sounds good to you and is in your budget.

Infinity Perfects are good subs. For a small, sealed enclosure, I recommend Image Dynamics IDQ10, or if you're so inclined, you can go 8" with the new Elemental Audio e8A.44.
