Adjustable Tint LCD Windows

Is there such a thing on the market for auto's? I know that there are companies that make such a thing for home/office use.

Basically it is glass with LCD inside (like your calculator). The more
current fed through the LCD, the darker the tint becomes. Inside you would have a dial to adjust the shade.

Think back to your solar power calculator in dim lighting v/s strong lighting.

This was an idea I had back 10 years ago and figured SOMEONE would have come up with a way to make and market it by now!!!

The Half-Bakery website has an idea very similiar called "Dial-A-Tint".

The biggest issue that engineers are dealing with is the sun + heat effect on the LCD (not to mention the price of a full LCD screen that needs to pass safety standards). A lot of ppl w/ PowerFC Commanders that left it exposed to the sun reports unreadable displays for a prolong period. That's from the heat wreaking havoc w/ the LCD matrix. Same prolly holds true for a large exposed surface like windshields. Inside mirrors are less prone to this problem.

If they ever get that in place, imagine the potential of a 16:9 widescreen colour LCD display on your windshield. Every time u start the car, it's pre-empted by the THX "The Audience Is Listening" intro. Kewl.

Actually that's not what he's talking about. It would still be cool though..

I might be off on the technical aspect of this.. but I think I'm close

what he's talking about is the equvalent of a single LCD as in Liquid Crystal Diode (I think) that spans a full window. Think of your digital alarm clock or watch, and think about half of the number 1.. either the top half or the bottom half.. that would be one diode. Now take that and stretch that across a window (actually pressed between 2 pieces of glass). it is either on or off (blacked out or clear) depending on a current running across the circut.

I saw something about this in office buildings, but I've only seen the OFF or ON position, not shades of dark. but damn.. it would be cool if it came out. especially with remote starts. when parked all windows are blacked out (including the winshield) when you start the car remotely, the windows un-tint themselves. sweet.

I have alwasy wondered why there wasn't adjustable tint, using some form of electro chemical or other new technology. They can have paperthin posters change their ads using a little bit of electricity. There must be SOME way to get a reliable adj. tint

I thought that feature was available for the roof of some late-model Porsche cars. I know I've seen it, and I think they were calling it a Targa (but I don't see how it would be one).

I have seen eyeglasses that Tint in the Sun, and get clear in the shade. Would something like that be feasible?
It won't have LCD that way.

Aren't auto-adjusting tint glasses just an "coating feature". Someone on the forums probably has a wife/or girlfriend who works @ an optomotrist and will know...

Granted, it might be REALLY expensive since it's usually about a $100 option on a couple square inches of eyeglass...

Auto adjusting isn't the same as a dial setting or a window with tinting ability. sometimes when it's light out I want the windows not to be tinted, and sometimes for show you'd want the windows to be tinted when it was dark. Glass (or a coating) that automatically reacted to the sun wouldn't give you that option.

good idea, its those "transitions" lenses, jsut make a window out of that material and your golden, they tint in the sun, and clear when you dont NEED it to, how perfect

*peeks around and delurks*

Actually, I don't think photochromic glass (aka transitions lenses) would be the best idea for auto glass. Namely due to the lack of response time. It takes roughly 5 minutes for the glass to go dark or light, and it's rather pricy to boot. So, if you're driving along and you hit a tunnel... It's a nifty idea, but I thing a single diode LCD would be a better (and slicker) solution. It's too bad I can't find a price on an LCD sheet that would be large enough for the job.

i saw this technology on a BMW 850* series car at a car-show here in houston a couple of years ago... very neat effect, but imagine if the system fritzed out while cruising on the highway at 130mph, totally blacked out windshield..!

True, but doesnt it just darken w/ power.
What about running down the battery when its on when you're away from the car. Cause you want it tinted when parked so your **** can't be seen into.

Would it really use that much power? Watches run for nearly a decade on a crappy button battery. Yes i realize this is a larger scale, but i don't think the power consumption would be too huge.

LCD is VERY low consumption.

If you knew you weren't going to drive your car for like a week, hopefully you would have it someplace safe and wouldn't need maximum blackout anyways.

It would be just soooo cool to get pulled over for window tint and by the time the officer got to your car, your windows would be clear...hahah

It must have been glare ociffer.

But really, anyone have any links to any real use of LCD for tint?

who cares about price? we just need to find out if it's possible (witch i think it is!) i was in touch with a place that makes lcds/leds but they didn't sell "sheets" they just sold the whole shot that was for the numbers at a drag way but those signs were pretty big and they only were 17 dollars (whole sale) so a sheet big enough to cover windows, hatch, windsheld shouldn't be THAT much money. we need to search this a little more...
