without cutting or customising, it takes both a 5 1/4" or 6 " speaker (not a 6 1/2").

Size doesn't matter.

Actually it does a little, but I think brand/quality matters more. In my 91, I had Boston Acoustics Rally Series 5 and a 1/4 in the doors with the tweeters mounted on the little triangle at the top of the door. They were the best sounding components I have ever heard. So look for quality more so than size.

But I have also heard that 6 and 1/2 will fit too.

My 89 had Polk components in the door. 61/2" speakers in the door, and the shock towers

what components did it have? i'm having trouble getting my dx series comps to fit without hitting my window crank (manual, ghetto style windows).

I got 6 1/2's in the doors of my '91 vert and could have probably gotten 6 3/4's in without any problems. I actually had to drill new holes for mounting because the opening was a little too big for the 6.5's.

Also I would recommend a component setup as well. I wish that it what I had done.
