A 50wx4 stereo means it outputs to FOUR channels, I.E. front right, front left, rear right, rear left, not to a four way speaker...

That's not a special type of output, that's what ANY head-unit that controls two front and two rear speakers is going to have. Its actually less then stock, as the stock headunit has the center speaker channel and the sub if you've got the Bose system.

Not true. Both stock systems use a center channel amp (not part of the headunit) that gets signal from the front left and right SPEAKER LEVEL feeds. The Bose system does NOT have rear channels but instead has a subwoofer amp (again, not part of the headunit).

4-way speakers have nothing to do with the headunit. Just go to a couple of stores and listen to speakers in your price range. Use the search function.

What's the signal level going to the center channel !?

Could you use a 4 channel amp and split off the L&R fronts to combine that signal for the center !? Reducing your effective wattage a bit of course, but the center amp shouldn't draw too much...
Or you could split the line level going to the amp, and .... ah nevermind, I'm putting a gauge pod in there anyhow Fuel Pressure, Oil Temp, And EGT maybe

Why would you do that for? If you're upgrading to a new audio system in your FD, just forego the center channel speaker; you won't hear it anyway.

In My Opinion
Pioneer 4 way 6x9's.

Great power handling and reasonably priced $320/4.

Raj

But, like Ryan said....go listen to some and make a decision.

Why four 6x9s? Front non-BOSE enclosures will only accomodate a shallow 5.25" or 6.5" speaker.

And BTW, that's "rynberg", not Ryan.

Crutchfield lists 5 1/4 for the fronts and 6X8s for the rears.

Well, this is an instance where Crutchfield is dead wrong.

I have Boston Acoustics 6.5" SL65 coaxials up front. They are a direct drop-in installation w/ no modification needed to fit. *Note: (I have a non-BOSE car.)

5x7, 6x8, and 6x9 all will fit, however, proper fitment will depend on the magnet size. Check speaker mounting depth before purchase.

Rears will be the same. Up front, you can go 5.25", however, you'll have to modify the BOSE enclosure to fit the speaker. This site won't let me link the image, but look at the very last pic on the bottom to see what I mean.

http://www.carstereohelp.com/stereor...zRX7FDrPnl.htm

Otherwise, yank the whole BOSE system out and you can put in 6.5"s.

Yank the bose system, the amps are designed to handle the 1 ohm Bose drivers. They don't have the oomph to drive the typical 4-ohm driver.

There's no such thing as "best"; sound is subjective. Some people prefer a "warm" sounding speaker, others, something that's more "sharp". What I like, you may not, and vice versa. Go to your local car audio store, audition all their 4-way speaker sets, and buy whatever sounds the "best" to you.

Is there even such thing as a 4-way speaker? It's hard for me to imagine that such a beast would be any better than a good 2- or 3-way anyway, but I've never even heard of a 4-way speaker. I have to think that it would be pretty deep anyway...

I believe Pioneer makes one. Personally, I don't understand stillmello's obsession with getting a 4-way. A well designed 2-way is going to offer the best sound at the same price point.

Exactly what Raj said. I have them in my car, and its VERY clear at high volumes. Also they are reasonably priced. If you have the money to spend id go with MB Quarts. The Pioneers are just a notch behind the MB's for half the price.
