1st Gen Stereo Question
My 83 GS still has the stock stereo in it. It actually sounds pretty good, but i would like a cd player. Can I just take out the old stereo and add a new one while keeping the existing speakers/amps?? I really don't want to re-wire the whole car, and the speakers sound good as they are. Also, what do I have to do to take the old one out? I can't figure out the best way to remove the center console cover.
Thanks,
Matt

Man its been a long time since I done an 83. I beleive from memory, 2 screws atthe top just under the dash. 2 screws behind ashtray. Remove plastic surrounding shifter boot, 2 screws behind it. I think there are 2 ***** on the climate control that need to be removed. After that the radio will come out after removing the screws securing it. But fitting a new cd player in there requires quite a bit of work. The width of the of the dash has to be modified, and the plastic radio surround panel has to be cut/filed too. Ok that said...
The amps can be used but Id say just rewire the speakers with the new radio, you'd be better off.
The DIN cords that connect to the radio can be used with a low level signal(RCA) from the new deck. But as far as pin config. I dont remmeber or know where to get it. So just rewire them....
