User CP (top left of this page)--> Edit Options--->about 1/4 of the way down is a drop down box. Choose 'Do Not Subscribe'.

This was bugging me too. If you want to subscribe you can manually do so if you wish, but it's nice to be able to set the default notification to "heck no"
