usb and haltech

I see that you need a serial port to run the haltech on your laptop. If you do not have a port can you use a usb with a serial adapter or does Haltech offer something that will use a different kind of hook up?

Thank you,
Craig K

I think people have used the adapters without problems, but the real issue with the E6K software is that it does not work with XP. so if you using win95,98 you should be fine, but XP does not work. I don't know about the E11 software but it likely works fine since it is a windows based program. the older programming software is DOS based.

Sorry to drag up an old thread...

I have the same problem as Craig, I'm running Windows 98se and an e6k, and my tuning computer only has a usb port. I've searched and came across SEVERAL threads like this one saying that is indeed possible to get the haltech DOS software to recognize the USB port, but none of them detail how it is done.

So how do I do it? Links to DOS drivers and how-to would be awesome, I'm pretty new to the haltech world. Appreciate it guys!

Steve

Usually those usb to serial port adapters don't work because they don't have true UART chips in them and they merely emulate a 9-pin serial in windows. This won't help you in DOS.

I bought a socket serial pcmcia card r-i/o off eBay to fix this issue...but seeing I am running windows xp it doesn't help me anyways and all amounts of hair pulling haven't gotten it to work. I have tried it on my older laptop with win98 and it works fine, but that computer already has a serial port built in. If you want it let me know. ahastings@darwinsc.com

The software will work in XP until you try connecting to the Haltech.

Well, we'll see. I've heard of some people using it with an adapter and without problems. I just think the majority of the people trying to use them aren't "computer people" and when they get the first error they give up.

Windows is a little more flexible than some people know.

But, it might not work, and that's why I have a backup plan.

And some people can be told not to touch a hot stove by 100 people but don't believe it hurts until they try it themselves.

What's the line from Tommy Boy? Something like, You can check the quality of the beef by sticking your head up the cow's *** but wouldn't you rather take my word for it?

like i said, we'll see. But do you really think everybody who's ever tried to get one to work knows what they're doing?
