I used the directions found on Hitmans web site for setting up the ignition system. I used the stock factory installation for the CAS, so the tooth offset is set at 11 and not 3. His directions say to set the trigger angle at 65 and then use the timing light to figure if it needs to be advanced or retarded. With the trigger angle set to 65 and the light attached to L1, timing lock enabled, the timing light would flash when the leading mark was well to the left of the timing mark on the front cover; too much advance. I raised the trigger angle value to retard the timing. With the trigger angle set at 78 the light flashes at the same time the leading mark is on the timing mark. (Trailing 1 also fires when the trailing mark is on the timing mark now)

My question: Is 78 too high a value?

Another question, not really related to any of the above info: The more advance on the timing, the more the EGT goes up, correct? <-- I could probably search on that, but I figured I'd ask here since I'm talking about timing.

I did a search and it seems that exhaust temp goes up if you retard the timing.

So let me see if I have this straight:

Retarded timing is having the spark occur late in relation to the piston or rotor position to TDC or what ever the factory setting is; (such as 5ATDC for rotaries.)

Advance is having the spark occur early in relation to the piston or rotors position to TDC.

Please correct me if I'm thinking about this bass ackwards.

 

No.
As long as it's higher than your max advance setting on your ignition maps.
...and it's lower than 100 - Haltech can only go 100 max on the offset.
