Reasons for weird behaviour from your E8/E11 (firmware update issues)

Hello all,

Its come to my attention that a few people are reporting problems in functionality from their E8/E11 units and they are mainly due to improper Firmware update. The process for the update has a few steps that cannot be missed, otherwise this causes all manner of funky behavior from the ECU. The procedure is as follows:

Step 1. Save your most current map under the version of software you are currently using, ie. v1.71.

Step 2. Download and install Halwin v1.89 from the Haltech website, also the Build 35 Firmware file. Dont forget the file is zipped so you need to uncompress it to your hard drive.

Step 3. After you've installed v1.89, go online with your Haltech ECU, click Options/Firmware Update, and proceed to find the firmware update file which is a ".bin" file. You will see the progress on the update window indicated as "block erase xx%" then "block write xx%".

Step 4. Once the process is done you hit OK and RESET THE ECU! This means turn the key off (power it down) then turn it back on.

Step 5. After its online again, hit File/Load all maps and locate the DEFAULT base map for your ECU (use E8 default map for E8 ECUs, and default map for E11's), this map is found in the Program Files/Haltech/Halwin v1.89 folder on your computer.

Step 6. After this map has been loaded, RESET THE ECU AGAIN.

Step 7. Go back online and now you can load your old map from the previous version of software onto the ECU.

Please note, that there are differences in a few things from version to version, most notably the throttle pumps and idle settings, as well as the Auxiliary Outputs.

Once you've loaded your map onto the ECU in 1.89 and configured it accordingly again to get the engine running correctly and making sure your base timing is sync'd correctly, save this map under a new name so as to not replace the previous one so you always have a backup in case you need to go back to 1.71, since you wont be able to open a 1.89 map under 1.71.

Hope this helps clear up a few issues with erratic operation from your Haltech ECU.

Some of the behaviors ive noticed with an incorrect firmware update are:

1. Injector Duty Cycle at 100% (injectors stuck opened)
2. No spark or fuel delivery
3. Auxiliary inputs or outputs not working
4. ECU freezing up or crashing software
5. Fuel Pump primes continuously
6. Changes to maps or setup menus not taking effect or ECU just plain behaving oddly

These are some of the things ive heard about, if anybody has any other comments, please feel free to add them. But the point is, the firmware update MUST be performed as per the steps in the previous post, or these problems occur.

Ah! i also have talked to at least 2 people who've tried to go online with a later version of software and not even load the appropriate firmware and the ECU also behaves crazy.
