P1000: FFE Wheel + Stock Coils Issue

Having a small issue here. So I got FFE all setup and working however ran into a "small" snag. When picking the RX-8 trigger wheel, the ECU Manager won't let me pick the Distributor option under ignition For the stock FC trailing ignition coil. I got the car running under waste spark, however only the leading coil is firing since the Ignition settings aren't setup correctly. Anyone have an idea about how to get this going correctly. Why is the Haltech so restrictive in the software arg...

Also, on a side note, with a timing light on the wheel, it seems to be 180 off. I'm pretty sure I got the wheel settings correct but I posted anyway.

At least the car is running, so that is half the battle right lol.

Well to solve the problem we did the Trailing coil mod where you get 2 trailing coils and modify it so it runs like an FD setup with no toggle. Car now runs reasonably well at idle. Stupid Haltech thinking users are retarded and can't pick their own settings.

Now we still have the timing marks being off by 180*. However, after a bunch of experimenting and talking, realized the motor has an S4 pulley on a S5 motor, duh. Ok so now looking for an S5 pulley to swap in and we should be set.

So if anyone has similar symptoms/issues, you know the "easy" solution lol.

Leading is 180* out, or trailing? Leading (in distributor and wastespark mode) is firing every 180* anyway, so that's not an issue.

Yeah it needs to be run in wasted spark mode since the software doesn't allow distributor mode and renesis pattern. (Although early Sprint RE's did..?!)

Ludwig is correct the wasted spark coil will show intermittent 180 out (hence wasted).

Make sure you check timing on all of the leads to ensure they are where they are supposed to be.

We finally got it running properly. It was a combination of of wrong pulley, incorrect coil setup, too much premix in the gas, fouling plugs. timing light not working often time. Now running 15 PSi well on the BNR stage 3 turbo.

Nothing wrong with the FFE wheel, worked like a Charm once we got it zeroed once solving all the other issues. Trigger angle was at 80 degrees once zero'd for reference.

You need to wire your trailing coils with the trailing coil mod and run wastespark mode if you want to use stock coils with the wheel.

Yeah, like THEWIRD says, you'll at least need another ignitor to use the trailing coil in wastespark. The ECU will not run distributor mode with the Renesis wheel. You will need to use wastepark or direct-fire modes and each trailing coil will need it's own ignitor.

whats your thought on this?

http://banzai-racing.com/FC_coil_install_how-to.htm

once i plug it in, i know i will have to fiddle with things in the harness. what will i most likely have to do? i have my harness patched at the plug that plugs into the stock ecu.

Didn't read through the whole thing, but I'd guess it shows how to remove the toggle function and install a 2nd ignitor? If so, that will work for your situation. Once you do the mod to install the 2nd ignitor, you will trigger T1 will IGN2 and trigger T2 with IGN3. Pretty straight forward really.

In essence that is what it is, merge 2 trailing coil packs into 1. Isn't it IGN3 and IGN4 though? :p

i think i may have gotten it. the leading is run with ign1 wire. the ign 2 wire isnt running a 2nd ignition coil (for the front) so thats skipped. the 3rd ign wire runs one trailing coil and the 4th runs the other. hm...

thing that is super confusing that i also figured out is that the schematic provided in this forum for the sport 1000 wireing for the FC coils is wrong. the harness colors are not the same as whats presented in the schematic.

can i run the bonzai mod in direct fire or waste spark?

well ive figured out this puppy with the help of the FD schematic, FC schematic, and "thewird"'s advice and this page
http://www.diyautotune.com/tech_arti...zda_fc_rx7.htm

after following the bonzai instructions to modify the trailing coils, it seems that ign 1 can stay right the hell where it is.

since the FFE is an rx8 trigger wheel, it wants to run in rx8 mode. ign 2 will also want to run a primary coil, but we wont use that as the primaries fire the same time ( unless im wrong? im 100% sure they do) and the rear coils on ign 3 and 4.

well, i just need to hook up ign3 and ign 4 and remove ign2. put ign 3 where ign 2 used to be on the harness of the fc, and then ign 4 where ign3 used to be on the fc harness.

woot. i think i see the light.

Yes. You are absolutely correct. That gets me every time.

IGN2 can be used as an additional DPO to run an accessory of your choice.

So to use the stock coils, and ffe trigger for the ps1000 I'll have to do the banzai mod? I've already modded a set from when I had my pfc. the procedures exactly the same?
