Question Microtech Ignition Scatter

I have herd HITman mention this problem, and tested it out on a MTX8 equipped car (my brothers RX7), as per his suggestion. Locked the timming and the thing went all over the place !

This sounds gay as ****, do all Microtech computers do this ****?????

Will my friends motor blow? Ignition is super critical and we saw a fair bit of variance when we tested it, after this I think we will go Haltech instead, I know AJC13B swears by it and his car is fully sick

Any guesses from the Pro Microtech runners, I am shocked to see this variance as I was not expecting it at all.

Ide be checking your wiring and the pickup in the crank angle sensor and make sure it is dry and clean, cause i did the same thing on a LT8 last night and sat rock solid on 10deg, i wired this car up so i know its perfect, so check the wiring,
My MTX8 in my mazda sat rock solid as well,

BTW im not a pro microtech runner just a backyarder.

I appreciate the input, you are one of the few guys who responds to my questions without any crap, I admire more backyard people than most shops to tell you the truth. I will check the wiring of the CAS tonight and tell you how I go.

What could be wrong with the wiring? loose connections etc?

No worries, Just trying to help!

i have to set the timing on a 4AGE tonight with a LT8 as well so ill check that as well, this thing runs hard and it still hasnt been leaned on yet!!

If you have a dry solder joint or a loose connection, moisture in the pulgs etc, they will cause problems, moisture is a killer it can make wires short with each other and all sorts of funny stuff, contact cleaner works well to remove it,

also noticed on series 4 and 5 crank angle sensors the factory wires are very weak and brittle, i changed mine over for new wire, bit of a job to change the wires inside the sensor but well worth it i think to remove the chance of interferance.

Another thing is plug leads interfering with the signal, if you have top gun leads or other cheapys they can cause a problem, i have found that magnacore leads seem to work really well and dont break down till well over 9500rpm.

Do this for me, put a 10 degree mark on the front pulley, this is simple to do.next, set the opt static to zero and set all the rpm sites to10 degrres. set the map sites and water / air sites to zero (write them down first) Set the timing a 10 degrees with timing lock off. Leave the timing lock off.Rev the engine and see what the advance does. Come back and tell me.

Set the timing lock on the MT8 4AGE last night, and it moved about 2 degrees when idle and revved up.
Just for intrest i threw the timing light on my 4A with a electronic dizzy and it scatter up to 7 degrees when revved up!!

Hmmm that is interesting, I will try this one out hopefully on the weekend and tell you my results. the first I herd of this "scatter problem" wa son here.

Hats of HITman, maybe Anthony can pass this on the microtech so they can iron out the bugs. Sounds pretty bad and would be a bit of a concern for sure !

Would still like to look at the trgger system before jumping on the ecu guys, could be a problem there. Also i have had problems with "dial up" timing lights doing crazy **** like that. How does your autronic stack up in this regard?

timing

Yeah, why not, set the base timing flat at 10 degrees or so, take out all the corrections and give it a rev. Mr Aubert assures me that his boxes are good for 0.25 degrees accuracy unde ANY operating condition. Look forward to the result.
We did it on a rb26 gtr the other day less than 0.5 degrees variance.

Microtech

Can some one please grab an ohm meter and tell me if the CAS wiring, the sheilded one wether the sheild is grounded. Basically put the ohm meter leads between the sheild and micytech ground /black wire/

I have wired up a few of these and the shelding is not earthed from what i can see, my wiring is not in the car at the moment so next time im over at a mates with a MT ill check for you.

Sheilding

I ask this question because a freind of mine was wiring one the other day and he mentioned it, seems a bit odd.

The shield wire should be grounded, and I am fairly certain that it says in the manual that it needs to be. I always do, however this could be an oversight by MT. I will look into it. Thanks

Chris,
We have in the past had ignition variation problems but believe we are on top of most pick ups. I must add that regardless of what name is on the EMS box, most scatter issues relate directly back to the pick up. As we have tried to use most factory pick ups in their standard form without modification, the trial is normally related to the ammount of frequency or noise filtration that is required for each type of sensor. It is our policy to have properly tested and developed these prior to them being released. Input from experienced people like yourself is always appreciated when it helps to rectify any problems we may have. Thanks-Anthony
