Elite2500 temp sender sensors Q

Hi,

I’m pretty new to ecu’s And how they operate so pls bear with me, and yes i did search but didn’t really find anything that helped me

im doing a conversion in to a 929, 13brew, efr 9180iwg and elite2500 ecu.

so I’m gathering bits so I’m ready to try to do the whole lot at once (car is currently being driven in standard piston form), I was on the haltech site and filling my basket up with some goodies and cam to the EGT sensor, i seen the K type thermocouple and the box thing that goes with it, it has 8 inputs, pretty simple so far, apart from the cost, lol,

so my questions are, is there another type of EGT sensor that dont need the box, that the ecu will read directly??

if not

since there are 8 inputs into the box, can i use a heap of the thermocouple’s for other temp sensors, ie, AIT, ambient air in the Airbox (to see how efficient I/C and w/m injection is, and any other temp i choose to have, i mean if the box has 8 inputs, heck i will use as many as i can to get the most out of it!!

thanks heaps for any advice, i really appreciate it.

cheers, krem

No, you cannot. The TC box is specifically for EGT, and there is no thermocouple probe that will go directly into the ECU.

Hey Krem

The advantage of the haltech TC boxes is that they convert the TC signals into CAN enabling multiple sensors to be read via the single CAN connector. This means 8 TC inputs can be read via the single CAN channel.

The disadvantage of thermocouples is that you cannot just connect the wires like any old wires. You need to use speciality type K connector plugs or contacts (if using Deutsch or Autosport connectors).

You don't have to connect the EGT sensors via a CAN box though. If you are just using thermocouples for EGT (x2) you can get a basic 2 channel signal conditioner/amplifier which turns the TC output into a 0-5V analog input signal which the Haltech can read via one of the analog input channels. It all depends on how many inputs you have available.

The 2 Channel amplifiers are cheap eg here: https://www.reveltronics.com/en/shop...nnel-46-detail

Thanks Greg, really appreciate it, lol, you know some of the silly questions i ask and as usual either you or bump have the answers!!!

i really dont have the need for all the capacity of the $600 TC box from haltech, but if i did HAVE to buy it i was gonna make the most of it with sensors everywhere!!

thanks again

As mentioned, you can use a 3rd party TC to analog conditioner and bring the TC information in on any analog channel. The issues here are that this solutions eats up valuable analog inputs and, in my experience, these conditioners are less than satisfactory in terms of service life and reliability. The Haltech TC boxes and probes are expensive. But they work really well and have always been bullet proof, in my experience.

You can use the TC probes for intake air temp and fluid temp. They work really well for pre-IC temps, where the air temp can easily be in excess of the range of the typical GM type air temp sensor. If you want to use them for fluid temp, you'll want to source a full shielded sensor with a stainless body. The sensors Haltech supplies are open element sensors, which work great for air temp and allow for the quickest response time but wouldn't be recommended for fluid temp measurement.

Hmmm,
i never really thought about it that way, although the 2500 has more than enough inputs for me, i get what your saying,
i guess it just means that i need to save for longer,
thanks for the input, (pun not intended), all the info I receive is appreciated.
