Elite ECU Base Timing

So almost 8 years ago I installed a Microtech LT10C in my turbo FC and have been tuning it myself with great success. I’ve learned a lot about wiring, tuning, AFRs, and timing values for my particular setup, which I intend to keep. However, due to the limitations of the Microtech tuning model, I’d like to upgrade to a Haltech Elite 550, which I’ll also be installing and tuning myself. I already have the NSP software and I’m getting familiar with all the settings and the VE tuning model that Haltech uses. That said, I do have one question which is setting base timing with the newer Haltechs. I’m still using the stock CAS and pulley (with the 5° ATDC / 20° ATDC marks). With the LT10, I would just lock the timing and move the CAS until I saw the 5° ATDC mark on the pulley with my timing light and then go from there. What I never really understood is whether the timing values in my maps were “true” timing, or if they were +5° from true (since static timing is at 0 in the Microtech while the pulley mark is at -5). Either way, I never had issues, and I’ve tuned the engine up to 30 psi of boost without problems.

Now, with the Haltech, how should I approach setting base timing? I know I can lock the timing, but there are also TDC Offset and Firing Angle values I can change. How would you guys go about setting base timing with the Elite ECUs?

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

There are a lot of ways to approach it. With that pulley, I lock leading at 10 BTDC and set a split of 15. This will lock the trailing at 5 ATDC. Attach your timing light to T1 and adjust the offset angle until the -5 line aligns with the pointer. Doing it this way allows the engine to run easily at idle and free rev easily so you can check for timing drift.

For the FD, lock the leading at 10 BTDC and the trailing at 30 split. Again attach the timing light to T1 and zero T1 to the -20 line on the pulley.
