cant get connected to e6k

i've been trying to connect my laptop to my e6k and have had no luck. when i hook the laptop up and hit the button to connect it starts to load haltech settings and the bar starts to go across the screen and then when the bar gets a little ways past the halfway point it just starts over. i am using an ibm laptop with windows 2000 and when i have the haltech program running, in the little bar a the bottom that shows what window i have open, it says frozen next to haltech. thats pretty much all i got.

Haltech ECU version?
Haltech proggie firmware?

Win2K uses a DOS emulator and there is no true native DOS on it.
My experience is that sometimes is works and sometimes is freezes.

Can you just run the Haltech off a DOS boost disk?

I used to use Win2000 a while back exclusively, and noticed that the refresh rate on the engine data page was slowed down somewhat, maybe i had a slow PC back then but it worked, slow, but it worked, i then went back to WinME and never had problems, and was always smooth.

But now with my current setup i dont have any problems in XP with Virtual PC (i swear by it)

Are you sure you're using the correct software version itself? What firmware version is it displaying while it's trying to connect? It might confusion between the single and dual map version on the E6K.

No, i used to use WinME on an old craptop (Pentium II 300mhz), cause 2000 on that was slow. Right now i use DOS 7.1 on my Virtual PC nothing else, works fine, and brings back so many memories of yesteryear. Helps me keep those old typed commands alive in my head.

on the main page it reads ek engine management programming software version o d
im not computer literate so be easy on me. i just want to get this car running, ive had it for 6 months and it still has a base map that barely lets it run. i have t4 coldside, 720 secondaries, walbro pump, full exhaust, and a test pipe. i think i used a base map for a stock car so it is backfiring and wont idle for ****.

Get an old craptop man, with a serial port, buy it from Ebay for less than 300 bucks. Simple.

Im also curious to know how you wired it all, if you did it correctly, or even if the base map you got is properly setup for your car.

this is an old shitty ibm laptop, i get get something with 95 on it if need be. the car was a friends, it use to run very well when stock and tuned. then he ran into problems and put a base tune on it. they never fixed it and it sat for awhile and i bought it. i have since added said aftermarket stuff and am now trying to get a laptop to hookup so i can tune it.

I restate my previous position about checking the wiring, as well as getting a laptop and going online with the Haltech to see if anything is wrong with it. Also, check the fuses and relays maybe something is screwey there...

i talked with rotary haltech tuner here in san antonio and he thinks its either the laptop or the software. so i will try the software first and then switch to a 95 laptop. if worst comes to worst i will let him tune it. i just wanted to give it go and so i would know whats going on. i know tuning is an art and not omething to be toyed with but i didnt buy a wideband for nothing. i will keep yall updated. thanks for the advice guys.

Dell D600 series laptops work great, have a centrino processor, plenty of speed and processing power, you can load win98/Me on it, or even XP with virtual PC, it should work fine. I would load VPC with old DOS 6.22, im sure you can find the install disks on the internet somewhere s you can download them.

claudio, i appreciate you taking the time to help me out even though im computer illiterate. my concern with this car is making sure the motor is good before i pay 300 to my local tuner. i am thinking about sending my e6k to somebody and letting them load their map on it so i can make sure it runs decent before i spend money on tuning. i may need that money for an overhaul.
