Autronic 500R cdi box and Haltech E6K. questions.

I just received my Autronic cdi box thanks to Enzo a dealer in NY USA. It was also highly recommended by Peter(Rice Racing) a forum member here and other forums.

I'm planning on running 4 coils using a wasted spark for leading. I'm using a haltech E6K, any problems using this unit with haltech? and any positive comments on this unit would be greatly appreciated. I had the choice of using 4 MSD boxes..( which I didn't want to) or the Autronic 500R model. One box 4 coils..

Should be no problem...
I believe there is a toggle setting on the 500R that you can switch from leading or trailing triggering edge.
Early models only had leading option, but you should have both.
Just make sure Haltech and 500R settings are identical.

sorry there's no toggle on 500R.
You need to set haltech to falling edge.

Ito your daughter is crazy.... lol

Hello Judge,

Ive been following up on your posts here and on the rx-8 club, you seem like a very level headed and knowledgeable guy. Im also a Haltech dealer and have been working on RX-7s for about 7 years too. As for your ignition situation i would honestly suggest using the Haltech E6K with the AEM C2DI unit that just came out. The unit has 2 versions, 4 outputs and 8 outputs. The 4 output unit can very well acoomodate your ignition needs and has been designed with the Rotary 13B ignition in mind. I have spoken with a few of the haltech gurus in australia and the AEM forum guys and they have told me the units sets up much like an MSD would be setup so installation and setup should be a breeze. And on top of it all, the cost of that unit is much more attainable than buying either 3 MSD 6A boxes, or 2 DIS boxes, or the HKS twin power, or anything out there.

Hope that helps.

The AEM CDI was an option until almost everyone who ran it on a rotary had problems. Check out the thread on the AEM forum and you'll see. Even AEM themselves admitted they don't know why the boxes shutoff or go to a safemode.

or expell thick brown smoke and goo out the sides of them.

Dude Aem CDI boxes are unreliable period. There mass produced in china(or hong kong) with cheap components. I actually had one sent out for testing because I wanted to know how they could make a cdi for so cheap.

I have used four to date and three of them burned up within minutes. the last one actually lasted about 3 months before it went up in smoke too. How many times do people have to say "You Get what you pay for"

I admit i fell for that trap also since i sold four of my customers telling them for the money they couldn't go wrong. Well guess what. They weren't to happy afterwards.
At least AEM will replace them but who wants to bother with that.

AEM also makes many false claims regarding their CDI box (EX: stating that it's the only CDI box that has "twin cap technology")
Blah, blah, blah. Autronic have been doing it for many years already.

If your on a budget i would recommend using the MSD.

If you want a quality CDI i would highly recommend Autronic, Motec, or M&W units.
As their very powerful, made with high quality componenets, and very reliable.

Oopss!! my bad, sorry about that, i hadnt check those threads in a while, thanks for letting me know, now that i think about it, i had a friend here with a built 95 Supra with a Haltech, which they tried installing that CDI and the thing burnet, i thought i was because someone fucket up and hooked up wrong, but thanks for sharing that.

I guess its back to plan A, 3 MSD 6A's, or 2 DIS boxes. Anybody know of any reliable, affordable ignition box in the market that works well for rotaries?

Went on the AEM forum again, and to my supprise found a ton of post portraining to issues with the CDI, its amazing to see that its plagued with so many problems. Even people with stock ECUs, Power FCs, its really depressing.

Haltech E6K Autronic 500R Mercury coils wiring

OK, I'm in with ITO on this setup. E6K, 500R (Grazie Enzo!) and 4 Mercury Marine coils.

My initial wiring planing:

Fires: HALTECH Output -> 500R Input
- Leading Spark "IGN OUT" -> "TRIG 2"
..(waste spark) "IGN OUT" -> "TRIG 4"
- Training (Front) Spark: "DIGITAL OUT 1" -> "TRIG 1"
- Training (Rear) Spark: "DIGITAL OUT 2" -> "TRIG 3"

The Leading ignition output will be split (in parallel) to pull to ground both the "TRIG 2" & the "TRIG 4" inputs into the 500R. This should keep the the Leading coils/sparkplugs firing in a waste spark configuration.

Your suggestions and comments are solicited before I start to cut and crimp.

So can I split the Haltech "IGN OUT" signal to both 500R input. I'm assuming that since it pulls to ground, the increase amperage on the Haltech Ignition drive will not be a problem. Like wise, I assume that the possibley redude VE- signal to the 500R will still trigger it.
