Afr too rich into boost

Hey guys I have an fc rx7 with a s5 streetported turbo engine. I’m running a haltech elite550,1000cc injectors, fmic, aem fuel-pump,Oem s5 turbo, and I’m premixing so no Omp.I had the car tuned and it was running pretty good until one day it just started going really rich when I got into boost 9afr and Lower when it does that the car bogs . the previous afr in boost was about 10.5, upon going over everything I noticed my injectors were clogged so I had them flow tested and cleaned. Now after I had them cleaned the ve map was really rich so I started trimming out some fuel. I took out all boost controllers and plumbed the wastegate back to oem so I should be getting factory boost settings. Can someone give me any advice on these numbers in the ve map? Does this look like I’m in the ballpark of what it should start looking like?

What fuel pressure regulator are you running?

I’m running an aeromotive fuel pressure regulator base fuel pressure set to 43psi

before I put it on it was a new unit. Not saying a new one won’t go bad though anything can happen I guess I can see if I can switch it out. My fuel tank had some black sediments in it from it starting to rust I wonder if that could’ve gotten in there and messed it up.

Your VE Table looks terrible. If you need help with tuning, drop me a PM.

Horrible in what way? Is it that much off ? I’m trying see if I should be looking at a mechanical issue or a tuning issue. The car drove fine until one day it just started bogging into boost and going extremely rich. It seemed odd to me that clogged injectors would cause this issue

It's unshaped. Plenty safe with a closed loop system on a Haltech though and it's not your underlying issue.

Injectors do have a tendency to stick open or seep when worn and that could possibly be it. What else have you gone through so far on the fuel system? A split vacuum line on a regulator wouldn't cause that much fuel to dump in. What does your fuel pressure sensor/gauge read vs. what's programmed into the ECU? Has any of that changed?

I think you're on the right track. Send the injectors out and see what they say.

Thank you for your reply. I’ve learned a lot from this forum and people like you who give advice. I’m new to the tuning side of things and I’m learning as I go along. As dangerous as that may be I’d like to learn on my own car. The injectors are new, South Bay fuel injectors 1000cc primaries and secondaries. I sent them out to get flowed and cleaned and the numbers when they came back were horrible I’ll attach a pic of that. When I saw that they were clogged with black sand like sediments I checked my fuel tank and found out that it was rusting so I drained it and cleaned it as much as I could. I can’t find another tank right now so I’m kinda stuck on that. Then upon further investigating I found out that my fuel filter (Russell 6an 650133 3inch filter) had no filter element in it. So that would explain how the injectors how clogged up. So I replaced it with another one. But I’m thinking I should really get a bigger filter on there. As far as my fuel pressure it’s a 1-1 pressure regulator and I have no way of monitoring pressure while driving at the moment as I only have a gauge on there. I’m looking to get a pressure sensor and wire it into the ecu to receive a reading. After I got the injectors back from cleaning and I cleaned the tank out I then re installed everything. Now it runs extremely rich. On idle it hunts from 11.0-12.5 and that’s where I started to lean it out. I just lowered the values in the ve table to match the target afr and to where it felt smooth. Then I just lowered the values some more in the overall map up to 11psi as I took off the manual boost controller to get back to stock boost

I’m with you on that, its ppl like Right brain design that make forums a great wealth of knowledge.

as far as the tank goes, use a POR15 kit to clean it and coat it up, i initially used cheap vinegar to give it a really good clean then used the por15 kits marine cleaner and coating, it will clean it up really good and it will (maybe) never rust again,
as far as tuning goes, i cant give anything on that side, I’m waaaay to simple for that,

all the best with it, Krem

thanks a lot bro I’ll try that out and see if it makes a difference. I’d like to get another tank and have it coated. In the future I’d like to do flex fuel and I’ve heard the E85 is corrosive on the gas tanks

Use Red-Kote, I hear its great for lining fuel systems that use both pump and alcohol fuels.

Yes, Red-Kote is what I used for my e85 Prepped Fuel Tank.

This is a good opportunity to look into an internal swirl pot/lift pump (Coachman Performance) + running an inline Bosch 044 (I have new ones for sale if you need them) configuration if that's in the budget.

I'm confused because your VE table makes it look like you're running out of fuel pressure, yet you say it's been running rich? Perhaps it's an ignition problem? Otheriwse maybe a sensor and/or trim table in the ECU is throwing off the fueling?

Thank you for your reply. running out of fuel pressure? It does seem like all signs are pointing towards a issue with the fuel system and ignition . I have haltech IGN1a coils with msd street fire wires And my plugs weren’t that worn, I didn’t change them after the car was initially tuned (I’ve changed them since) I’ve checked power to the coils and I’m getting good voltage. I’ll go over the ignition and fuel system again. I’ll post my entire map later

Not trying to be rude here, but whoever "tuned" this needs a serious talking to. Nothing looks good.

Main Issues:
  • Target Lambda
  • Fuel (VE) Table Shaping
  • Timing Curve
  • Injector Firing Angle
  • Injector Setup and Data
  • Ignition Dwell Table
Really would strongly suggest you email me on this one... Beyond the physical fuel system issues, this is appalling.

I believe I spoke to you over on HP academy and mentioned the same things that have been mentioned here, most notably and among other things that at least in boost (and other places) your VE numbers are static. Ryan should be able to fix you up.

If you're not a vendor you can't advertise your services/business on this forum. Mod crew has had enough of this repeat offender.

???
i haven’t seen anyone advertise on this thread, just a question and many ppl being happy to help and offer advice!
If there was something wrong in requesting a member private messaging another member then maybe the private message option should be gotten rid of??
ive joined forums like this to learn from people with experience and also to offer my experience in the fields I have it in!
Please forgive me if there was a post with advertising that has since been taken down without me seeing it, but as it stands I’m greatful for the willingness of some members to go above and beyond to help others out.
