Yes, and I don't know... it hasn't been sunny here for the last 2 weeks. It's gonna be coated so it wont be like putting your arm on raw aluminum, but aluminum does retain heat more than plastic. Plastic injection molding takes unbelievably expensive tooling (but the parts come out cheap after youve made a few thousand)... long story short though, it can't be made in plastic.

Talking

There's enough interest for us to do the part if EVERYONE interested pays in. We'll end up taking only a small hit on the project which Dan and I are willing to absorb. The lid price would be $250. We have to add on shipping and paypal fees separately to this price as well (if you want to send a money order we can knock off the 3% paypal fees). Paypal and shipping fees would be an additional $10.

If you guys are serious about doing this we will make it happen, but have to collect funds before putting this into production. We need at least a $125 non-refundable deposit from everyone on the list (but really need the total purchase price as we are doing this AT COST).

If we don't reach at the very minimum 50 deposits, we will refund money to anyone who has submitted (if the GB fails).

Payment:

Please submit payment to: sakebombgarage@gmail.com

Full payment: $260 (please submit total if you can)
Deposit: $125

***In the 'notes' section of your payment, please include:
  • "FD map pocket lid"
  • Your desired finish (93 smooth, or 94 textured)
  • "Payment in Full/Deposit"
  • Your forum name
  • *Make sure your shipping address is correct in paypal

International shipping: Please shoot us a PM so we can get you a shipping price.

Thanks everyone, we're excited to make this happen!!!
-Heath

^PS please don't update the list as "paid, or deposit" We will update the list periodically as we receive payments. Thanks, it just helps us keep things organized, and makes our job easier.

Well it seems like the interest in this has died out, or people prefer the lid from 'the competition' . Obviously we can't compete on price as we would have been doing these at cost. I'll ask the mods to close the thread, cause without 50 deposits in, and quick, we can't make it. Can't say we didn't try though

Mods, you can lock this thread.

Gee, I was about to pay my deposit. Maybe if you gave us a deadline by which to pay our deposit instead of shutting this down two days after requesting payment of the deposit you would have a better head count. Is this now officially dead? If so, too bad for all of us.

If this reopens let me know. Im sure the interest is there, just that the deadline came and went too fast for anyone to notice it.

Sorry, I just assumed after a few days with no response the interest had died out. Since we are doing it at cost, if there is a risk of losing money (ie not a ton of interest or people on board) we can't really produce em. If there is still interest, I can shoot PM's to everyone on the list.... I just don't want to try to "push" the product on people if they would rather go elsewhere, or feel it's too expensive.

Its just gotta be a ground roots effort if you guys want it done.... not top down from us Power to the people?

I don’t check www.rx7club.com everyday so I was not aware deposits had opened up. With that said I am still very much interested in this and I would give people a month or two to get the money together my money is already spent for at least three weeks but when I have it I will send the full $260. So please don’t give up we are still interested!

The issue really is turn around time... it would be a couple weeks to have the molds made, cast a couple lids off the mold, then verify fitment and have the machining fixture made... then another few weeks for the big production run. Coat with our proprietary coating, pack with hardware and ship. With another company attempting to produce a similar part, but at a quarter of the cost, it's a tricky position to try to make a part at cost.

Ultimately our lid will cost $260 shipped including PP fees (and we walk away breaking even).

The 'competition' is offering $200 (without mentioning shipping and paypal fees which should be at least $15) to sell a part using a cheaper process, made overseas, not machined, no examples of the finish or if they can retain the stock texture in whatever casting process they are using...

But at the end of the day, most people would rather would rather take a shot in the dark with company X for the $45 savings. Thats just how it goes in the FD world now... nickel and dime-ing parts is now commonplace and, quality comes second to cost. Ebay parts are common place on the FD now... it's all got to do with the cheapening prices of FD's.

We have to have backing from the FD community to make this thing... I just don't see it materializing with the lure of a cheap replacement out there... but maybe I'm wrong. In the last year the FD market has started to resemble the FC market more and more, and that kinda ties our hands as FD enthusiasts wanting to make QUALITY upgrade parts for the FD.

It on you guys really I posted deposit and full payment options above. There is a signup list if you are a new member interested (simply add your name)... and spread the word to FD buddies so we can get enough people together to run this thing. Grassroots!

Thanks! I'll have Dan update the list over the weekend, we just a handful of payments in . Again, if things fall through, we'll refund your payment/deposit.

BTW for anyone interested, we could possibly get the price down cheaper (by about 20 bucks) if we didnt have the handles machined (ie roll pin like stock, vs machining for a replacement bolt with a pivot collar)... though our current solution is really the best fix for the problem (from a technical standpoint). The roll (like stock and company X) creates slop in the pivot point, which is made worse by the plastic bearings it pivots around. This is directly why the lids break (from this slop)... so what happens if you add an invincible lid? You then start transferring the binding to the rest of the assembly (ie the plastic box and springs attached to it) and over time will simply end up breaking apart the box. It would bring the cost down however

You may want to have Rich put a sticky in the third gen section to get the word out that payments are needed ASAP, it's easy to miss this section

My preference is for you to keep the existing design. In otherwords, don't be penny wise and pound foolish.
