Hey everyone - first and foremost I owe a huge THANK YOU to everyone that has shown interest thus far and helped spread the word. The response has exceeded expectations and we are 100% full steam ahead on this. Not a whole lot of updates to share other than our first 3D prints are on the way (tracking says they will be here tomorrow).

For this first run, we had to print in three pieces (limitations of 3D printer) but it will help us work out fitment, and most importantly, placement of all the mounting points. If we can verify everything fits under the plastic panels - with no interference with OEM components - this round of testing will be deemed a "success". If we can figure out some spots we can modify to add additional capacity that'll be even better.

Our next print after clearing the above hurdle will be two pieces AND printed in clear acryite. This will help us test how well the sump works in regards to "slosh" (among other things).

3D Prints have touched down! Very exciting to see a CAD model come to life!







As mentioned, we had to print this in three pieces - but everything lines up perfectly.

Today or tomorrow I'm going to try and make my way over to the shop and do some test fitting. I'll report back after that happens and let you guys know the good, bad and in between. Hopefully everything fits!

 

Matt, how are you planning to connect the three pieces? Could you not keep the ends of the pieces in tact and drill holes in them to provide baffling?

 

This is just a prototype. First of at least two, perhaps more.

This one is three piece due to the limitations of the 3D printer we chose to use. But that's ok, because the only duty of this piece is to verify fitment behind the OEM plastic panels and to make sure the mounting points are spot on. As for bonding these together - Devcon Plastic Weld or, believe it or not, superglue are best for PLA (the material this was printed from).

The next 3D print will be two pieces and done in clear acryite. Again, only a prototype and focus will be on testing slosh / performance of the sump.

From there, if all is a-ok, we give the green light to make the actual mold which will take raw plastic and form the actual tank - which will be one piece.

All I'm trying to do with posts like these are keep you guys in-the-loop on how a product goes from concept to production and all the step along the way.

The above images are nowhere close to a true production piece. The production piece will be on par with the OEM tank in terms of finish, clarity, etc.

Just thought about something, does the US spec have a washer tank in the front also? Because my Euro-spec does not, so if i replace the rear tank with this im out of washing fluid xD

Not that i use it much tho, would probably be just as good with a good old spray bottle in the trunk

 

Yes, we do have a reservoir in the front. IIRC, the only FD's that came with a tank in the trunk were the Touring models, because they also came with the rear wiper. Base and R1/2 models didn't have the wiper, so didn't need anything back there to spray.

 

Great question - and fendmonkey is right. Only Touring models with the rear wiper have the tank in the back.

Additionally, the front tanks are in *most* FDs and they are still available from Mazda. I actually just bought one a month ago from Ray Crowe for $55.

Now, the absolute irony of this project would be that the new rear tank causes a shortage of the front washer tank!
