Lightbulb Will 1st gen tranny (84) fit 2nd gen (88)?

5 Speed tranny's bad in an 88 GTU.

I have a good 5 speed from an 84 GSL.

Will it fit?

Thanks,
CB

Yep! Not sure about the tranny mount location though.

Lightbulb 1st To 2nd Gen Tranny Swap

Any difference in tranny mounts, speedo cable/wiring connectors, or driveshaft splines between an 84 GSL and an 88 GTU?

Drive shaft will need modification or custom. Directfreak installed a turbo II tranny in his Cosmo turbo charged GSL-SE 1st gen and needed a custom drive shaft. I think the splines are differant.

Lightbulb Turbo Splines

I think turbo splines are different too, they sell a different alignment tool with clutch kits for turbo models.

There is no turbo tranny involved in my swap - the one coming out or going in.

I'm asking if an 84 GSL transmission will fit an 88 GTU. Neither is, or was a turbo, and I don't care about gear ratios.

Thanks,
CB

Yes, it will fit, but you'll have to do a little work first. You'll need to put the rear housing from your 88 onto the new tranny (which is a little pain in the *** until you figure out how to get the shift fork to line right) and then it will bolt right up.

The speedo cable will plug in just fine, but you need to pop the speedo gear out of the old tranny and put it in the new one so that your speedometer will be accurate. You may want to double check the other wires that plug into it, you'll probably need to use your old wires for it too.

For reference, I put a 1991 coupe tranny into an 84 GSL-SE. Second gen and first gen gearings are a little different, but you may like the first gen tranny better.
