Water pump failure oil everywhere

I had noticed that my water pump was making a grinding sound a few days ago. Thinking it was on its last leg I sent out for another pump, but decided to drive it one last time to get to school. On the way the add coolant light kept coming on (but the temp gauge stayed cool), so on arrival I popped the hood and to my horror there was oil (tan colored) everywhere! There was some coolant here and there and the reservoir was completely empty (I had just re-filled it a week ago) but the tan colored oil was definitely in larger quantity. Also the water pump has subsequently stopped '"whining" so I assume it gave up the ghost. Where did all this oil come from? Time to save up??

Thanks for the time and advice.

85' gsl-se, s5 motor with s3 front cover guess I should mention that.
