Turbo GSL-SE (Again..but different)
Turbo GSL-SE (Again..but different)
According to this chart on MazdaTrix http://www.mazdatrix.com/faq/rotorwgt.htm
It should be ok to turbo the standard gsl-se 13b motor without having to get a transplant Turbo II motor. I in theory, should only have to get a turbo exhaust manifold, turbo and some sort of engine management (megasquirt?). Why am I thinking that is too easy. Internally, what differences do I have to face other than static CR and rotar weights? I figure the intakes are different, but will a later model intake (upper or lower or both) bolt up to my gsl-se block? Thanks in advance (please dont be angry if this question has been asked over and over I searched but most of the replys were related to swapping engines). I am trying to use my block (rebuilt to freshen up the internals) for a turbo upgrade. The N/A 13B is leaving me wanting more and I have driven turbo cars (Conquest TSI) the sure kick in the pants at 3000 rpms.
Has anyone done a turbo upgrade to their existing early 13b?

You can turbo anything if you can tune it. You would definitely need fuel management. The GSL-SE only comes with 2 injectors so plan on adding 2 more. The S4 2nd gen manifolds can bolt right up with just minimal port matching on the intermediate ports. The good thing about this is that it does have the extra injector locations built in. Just get the accompanying fuel rails. The T-II turbo manifold will not just bolt up. There are 2 reasons for this. For one, the turbo will hit the lower manifold if it sits this close to the engine. The second problem is that the intermediate housing has a big block cast into it that sticks out the side of the engine. The 2nd gens don't have this. The stock T-II manifold is designed around this block not being there and consequently you can't just bolt it on. A spacer would take care of both problems. The other option is a new custom built lower manifold. You could also install a T-II manifold if you did enough port matching. You still couldn't just install the turbo though. To make a turbo fit and do all the plumbing is fairly straight forward. Just be sure it gets tuned good.
Peace God,
Ok so is it a better Idea to get a second Gen block/engine to use a a rebuild core? Can I use the first gen distributor with the second gen block? reason I ask is because my 'master plan' is to do this turbo motor using Megasquirt to control the injectors, and possibly using the simpler ignition, but I dont really understand how the second gen ignition works , and if it can run with megasquirt without using the rx 7 ecu and all that jazz.. Thanks in advance,
Rasta
