Trouble Starting

Hey everyone,

I've got a '74 REPU, I don't know a ton about it but I know it's got a 13B and a Weber IDF or IDA carburetor.

My only real problem with it is it seems to have a hard time starting. I feel like it cranks a bit on the slow side but even still I can't seem to get it to fire up without the help of brake cleaner or starter fluid, I've tried hooking a second battery direct to the starter to and it did crank slightly faster but still wouldn't fire without help and it still felt like the crank was slower than I would expect. Once it starts it runs great, holds good idle albeit a bit lopey and revs out without breaking up. Also once it's fired up I'm able to shut it down and restart it without brake cleaner or starting fluid fairly reliably, maybe 75% of the time.

As the vehicle is still new to me and I don't have a full history on it, I added a bit more premix to the fuel than I would otherwise have done (the OMP is removed) just to be safe. Maybe the additional oil in the fuel is contributing to the hard starting? The carb also doesn't have a choke, maybe that's my issue?

I've changed plugs, tried setting the carb to the default configuration recommended by google and toyed with the timing slightly all with no luck. I know hard starting can be a symptom of low compression but without a rotary comp. tester I'd like to rule out some cheaper possibilities first.

Thanks,
Kevin

the IDA has no choke, so you need to add fuel when its cold. usually you can pump the gas a couple of times, and crank, pump gas a couple of times and crank, and it'll start.
