fb that won't start

I have a 82 that I just can't get to start I tested the starter motor it was bad I am going to replace that this friday but the guy that tested it for me showed me what was wrong with it. Him and I both thought that the starter was not the problem cause it was working to an extent. I have check the spark it has that it is getting gas to the carb but I still don't know what it wrong with it.. I was hoping that someone on here might have some type of suggestion???

if the timing is off, the engine wil have a hard time starting but should start and will run rough, backfiring and missing like the devil. the starting fluid should have fired the engine up. is the gas good that sits in the tank? is the carb gummed up? check the sight glass on the front of the carb after you crank the engine. it should be half full of gas, nothing more. this is your float sight glass. if the level is off, you carb is out of adjustment and that will prevent the engine from starting.
