Transmission stuck in fourth gear???

This mornig I went for a drive and noticed that the third and fourth gears are constantly getting stuck ( First, second and fifth are working just fine...). I could easily shift into third and fourth but they would get stuck when I would shift out. The more I drove the worse it got... untill I finally had to pull over and stop. I towed the car back home and it's just sitting there stuck in fourth gear. I'm really confused because I don't know transmissions at all...?
Could somebody please explain what is going on! Any help is appreciated

Thanks

This happened to my friend's 91 Turbo II, and it turned out that he had "welded" the clutch to his flywheel. He did this when he raced a porsche one night and dropped the clutch at high rpm's. He said after he did that, it started getting stuck in gears, and finally ended up staying stuck in fourth gear. When we pulled the transmission out, and took off the pressure plate, we actually had to pry off the clutch!! Not only was it worn all the way down, but 2 of the rivets that were showing on the clutch material had somewhat welded themselves to the flywheel!!!
