Trans Input Shaft Removal

I just bought a Miata tranny to swap the gear section into an FB. I know I have to machine the Miata input shaft to get things to work. I was wondering if anyone could explain briefly how to remove the input shaft so it can get machined. Looking at the FSM (and all over this site and the internet) I can't find any explanation. The FSM give me the impression that the entire gear train may need to be disassembled to get to the input shaft. That doesn't feel right, but...

I'm sure it will be fairly obvious once I start taking things apart, but I am too impatient to wait that long. Besides that, the level of difficulty, will determine when I decide to make the swap. Any info would be helpful.

Thanks,

Carl

the FSM is right, mostly. you need to take it apart enough to slide the main and counter shafts out of the bearing plate.

Sounds like a lot of work for someone not familiar with taking transmissions apart. I guess I'll have to find a totally dead one first. Thanks for the response.
