towing my car

Hi, I have to drive down to Maryland to pick up a car I bought. It has a blown engine so I have to tow it back. Would it do any damage if I towed it with a car dolly 400 miles or should I use a full car trailer? Gary

All Rx-7s are rear wheel drive. If its a 4 or 5 spd manual tranny, you should be able to put the tranny in neutral and disconnect the drive shaft from the rear differential so the wheels don't spin the tranny output shaft and rotate the speedometer gear. Same with automatic. Put in park and remove shaft.

I HIGHLY suggest you get a full trailer. They are much safer to tow with. I think there is a thread in the 2nd Gen forum about a guy that damaged his truck and totaled his RX-7 and dolly because it jacknifed on him.

Be sure you have a big enough truck. I have seen people pull full trailers with heavier cars that I have with something as small as an S-10. That is scarry considering that sometimes I feel that my Yukon is not up to par towing my 1500lb trailer and 2400lb car. And my Yukon has upgraded suspension and brakes just for towing and I also have a $300 load leveling trailer hitch (not just a ball).

Good luck.

In the same thread, the fellow that damaged his truck confessed he was probably going to fast when he tried to pull off the road. In that same thread, there are people that used a dolly for many, many miles with no problems. I towed a 7 from Balt. to central Jersey without a problem with my Grand Cherokee.
You'll be fine with a dolly.

Turbonut,
Out of curiosity, when you towed your 7, did your 7 have a lowered suspension? If so, you didnt scrape your exhaust?

No stock suspension. There was a lot of clearance. Even when I ride up on ramps to change the oil/filter, pipes are quite a distance from the floor. I don't think there would be a problem towing on a flat surface, but might have problems exiting a driveway, or sharp decline with a car that's lowered.
