Took the end shaft play on the front counterweight

Hi guys,

I rebuilt my engine yesterday. I measured the end shaft play by putting the dial indicator on the front counterweight. When I arrived at home, I noticed that the fsm puts the dial indicator on the front hub. To me there should be not difference in the reading but I wanted to make sure.

What do you guys think?

Thanks.

doesn't matter. they use the center of the hub bolt because the further you go from center you may be measuring some slop in the stat gear bearings. if it's within specs the way you did it i would not worry about it.

The end play was at the limit of the standard value at the counterweight: 0.0026 or 0.0027

The max is 0.0035.

I personally want to see the endplay around or less than 0.002" Thats what I aim for.

What is the impact on the engine of a higher or lower end play?

Well from my experience a high amount of endplay can damage the front torrington bearings and possibly cause bearing failure. I say this only because I have taken apart 1 engine with a failed rotor bearing and measured the endplay at over 0.005"....now whether that actually made the rotor bearing fail or not, I could not find any other reason.
